Ubisoft’s second iteration of its popular online looter-shooter franchise has continued to turn heads after a rocky launch as Massive Entertainment continues to develop additional content for The Division 2. As fans continue to press about what could possibly be next after the successful launch of Warlords of New York that brought additional difficulty along with some new locales, Ubisoft is finally ready to announce what’s coming to the game.
It should be noted that, empirically, Ubisoft is arguably within the timeframe for its next expansion at this point. The Division 2 released on March 12, 2019, in a state that admittedly needed a bit of care. The combat and looting mechanics were solid, yet various bugs and progression plateaus stymied and frustrated fans of the franchise. Roughly a year later, Warlords of New York released on March 3, 2020. This paradigm, however brief it was, is about to be broken.
Ubisoft has announced that it is going to recycle content from prior seasons as it prepares for a late-2021 update. The content, according to Ubisoft Massive, will be a “major update” including a new game mode along with new means of progression. Ubisoft notes that the content is still in the early stages of progression, but it is eyeing a means of emphasizing build variety. In the interim, gamers belatedly arriving to the late-blooming title will be able to grab the rewards from earlier seasons of The Division 2 to prepare for the new content.
In terms of what that content could ultimately be, Ubisoft is currently staying relatively quiet aside from noting it will offer a shift from standard gameplay. The first three chapters of The Division 2 brought about the Manning National Zoo, Coney Island, and even the Pentagon as Ubisoft congregated acclaim from critics and fans alike for its persistence in bringing additional content to the more than 40 million players.
In Warlords of New York, new PvE content was introduced by way of a skyscraper. The tower is called “The Summit,” and offered a near-endless amount of content as players scrambled up 100 floors, facing bosses every tenth floor while (originally) the difficulty slowly crept upwards. Ubisoft then updated it to allow players to opt for their own difficulties and directives within the raid to continue to work through the content at their own pace while being able to set targeted loot.
Throughout the lifespan thus far of The Division 2, Ubisoft has been able to consistently add both value and content to the looter-shooter to the pleasure of its fans. When looking at the track record, barring the rough launch, the upcoming content for Division 2 seems likely well worth the wait. It may be wise to use this time to gear up for a new build and find any collectibles players are still missing from seasons past.
