It’s been three months now since the release of Cyberpunk 2077. CD Projekt Red’s sci-fi RPG may not have had the smoothest launch, but it’s nevertheless drawn many millions of players into Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City.
One of the major themes of Cyberpunk 2077 is the blurring of spirituality and reality in a digital world, which leads directly into one of the game’s most mysterious side-missions. Players can unlock The Fool On The Hill after finishing main story mission The Heist. The side mission tasks players to find and scan 20 pieces of graffiti scattered across Night City. Each of these pieces represents one of the Major Arcana of a Tarot deck, and collecting them all can reveal some interesting insights into Cyberpunk 2077‘s ending.
Each of the 22 Major Arcana cards of a traditional Tarot deck represents a character or location that bears symbolic meaning. Tarot-reading is the practice of drawing cards from the Tarot deck, and then interpreting the result based on the combination of meanings. Players can have their Tarot read at Misty’s Esoterica shop in Cyberpunk 2077, which is also where the The Fool On the Hill quest begins and ends.
Misty’s readings can provide some interesting insights into the game’s story, and players will get a chance to do one more reading with her before the final mission. During the The Fool On The Hill quest however, 20 of the 22 Major Arcana are found as wall-graffiti, each representing a stylized, cyberpunk-esque take on the traditional symbology. To finish the quest, players will need to find and scan each one, normally accompanied by a comment from either V or Johnny Silverhand.
At the beginning of the The Fool On The Hill mission, Misty will explain to V that they are represented by the Fool card. In Tarot-reading, the Fool is often interpreted as the protagonist of a story, and the other Major Arcana represent the path that they’ll take on their journey through life. This is commonly known as the Fool’s Journey, and is a method of introducing beginners to the Major Arcana cards.
Similarly, Johnny Silverhand is represented in Misty’s reading by the Magician card. The Magician symbolizes a charismatic, mysterious, and intriguing figure, one that straddles the line between heaven and earth. These representations all fit with Silverhand’s history of fame and rebellion, as well as his limbo existence as a digital copy. The other two cards to feature prominently in Misty’s first reading are the Wheel of Fortune and the reversed Chariot, which represent the danger and conflict that V will face.
Before the beginning of Cyberpunk 2077‘s final mission, after the player has made their decision of how to approach it, they will do one last reading with Misty. This reading can be different depending on what decision the player came to, but will always start with the Fool and the reversed Magician. In this case these cards represent V and Johnny as they were at the start of the game, naive and obsessed respectively.
Depending on the player’s choice, Misty might also reveal the Devil or Judgement. These are the two Major Arcana that aren’t in the The Fool On The Hill quest. Instead, they can be found in the game’s final mission, depending on the player’s decision. If the player decided to go with Hanako’s plan, they’ll gain the Devil achievement, a hint that this isn’t the best ending for V. The Judgement card represents the final crossroad in V’s journey, and can be found in multiple endings just after defeating Adam Smasher. Together, these cards put a book-end on V’s journey throughout the game. Each is heavy with symbolism, as are the other Major Arcana achievements for the different endings. In the end, it’s up to the player to decide whether there was something truly supernatural behind the Tarot and its meanings.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, and will launch in 2021 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
