Animal Crossing: New Horizons Player Discovers New Way to Avoid Wasp Attacks

While most wildlife in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is harmless, wasps are as aggressive as they get. However, one Animal Crossing: New Horizons players has found a new strategy that can be used to escape the stingers of the angry bugs.

The strategy is tied to one of the new Super Mario crossover items. While players can get stars, flowers, and bricks from the Super Mario franchise to decorate their islands with, as well as outfits based on certain characters, pipes have become one of the most popular items. Aside from being a cute homage to Nintendo’s legendary franchise, these pipes double as a way to teleport between two points — effectively making island travel a whole lot faster.

While players may already love the travel potential of Mario’s pipes, the tools should become even more popular once fans realize they can aid in wasp escapes as well. One of these escapes is shown by the Redditor typhanniem, with the player making use of a new escape style in the appropriately named video “saved by the pipes.” With the Reddit user’s clip beginning with a bit of tree shaking, any experienced Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan can anticipate what is going to happen next. Sure enough, a nest falls to the floor and a chase breaks out, with typhanniem bolting in the opposite direction of the wasps.

While the problem could have been solved by simply catching the wasps, the situation was too late to fix. Fortunately, the Animal Crossing: New Horizons fan had her trusty pipe close by, running to safety before the wasps could strike. Jumping into the pipe, the animation plays out, with the wasps flying in circles as typhanniem heads down the pipe and to another part of the island. Once they reach the other side, the frightening wasps are nowhere to be seen.

Prior to the introduction of pipes, escaping from wasps was in Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a lot harder. If players missed with a net, the few escape routes available included players entering into their home, heading through the door of a villager’s house, or running to one of the island’s shops. Once diving was added to the game, players could jump into water for safety as well. Still, with options being so limited, having these pipes available should help players feel a bit safer.

While Animal Crossing: New Horizons fans may need a bit less medicine going forward, they should not expect pipes to save them all the time. After all, only two of the green portals can be placed on each island, meaning that wasps will still sting running players more often than not.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
