In every side-scrolling game that involves lots of exploration as well as retracing one’s steps time and again, there are items that reveal more of the world and allow the player to traverse it in different means. The gorgeously designed areas in Blasphemous are ones that gamers will undeniably venture through in this manner multiple times in their efforts to see and do everything that this immensely fun game has to offer.
The key items that allow the Penitent One to do so are known as Relics, and they often take quite a great deal of time as well as trial and error to obtain. However, all of them serve the player very well, in various regards, and some are even required to make the pilgrimage through specific obstacles. There are 7 in total and each should be sought out if one seeks 100% completion in the beautiful and bloody world of Blasphemous.
To acquire this bag of bloody sand that allows the player to stand and jump on previously intangible platforms, there are a few steps that must be followed before it becomes accessible. Firstly, head to Mercy Dreams and pass through the green-glowing crack in the wall to enter Candelaria’s first-encountered shop. Here, one needs to buy the Key to the Chamber of the Eldest Brother (costs 400 Tears of Atonement) to open a certain door.
After that, head back to the first area in the game: the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow. One will find a door here that they could not enter the last time they encountered it. Interacting with said door will now cause it to let the player in, thanks to the key, and within it, one will find an ornate gold and glass case containing the Blood Perpetuated in Sand.
This Relic is one that requires 3 specific beads upon one’s rosary to acquire, and it is also needed to attain a different Relic later on. The most notable use to players, however, is that the Nail Uprooted in Dirt allows them to walk through deep water and mud unhindered, making one’s time in areas filled with such minor obstacles far less tedious. The 3 required beads, which are also quest items, to gain access to this Relic are the following:
- Fourth Toe Made of Limestone (obtained from Redento after activating the moving platform that lets him travel over Jondo)
- Little Toe Made of Limestone (obtained from Redento after helping him in the Wasteland of Buried Churches)
- Big Toe Made of Limestone (obtained from Redento after helping him get through the Patio of Silent Steps)
After getting all 3 of these rosary beads, head to the top right corner of the Mother of Mothers area to find Redento the pilgrim in a room with a statue imitating his posture. Equip the three limestone toes to one’s rosary and the statue will move, revealing a secret entrance into the single-room area where one will find the Nail Uprooted in Dirt.
Understandably, to get this magical severed hand, one will need to find a non-magical one first. The Incorrupt Hand of the Fraternal Master allows players to find secret areas as it chimes gently to alert one to the presence of such chambers, therefore it would be best to acquire this Relic as soon as possible to cut down on some backtracking later if one intends to get 100% completion in Blasphemous. However, acquiring this Relic requires the use of the Nail Uprooted in Dirt.
The first step to holding this mystical hand is to explore the central portion of the Desecrated Cistern. At the bottom of the vertical shaft-like area, there will be a ledge to the right with a corpse on it and a door on the left wall. Equip the Nail Uprooted in Dirt and slide under the narrow passage on the bottom right to find a Severed Hand. Bring this dismembered limb to the giant statue in the Lake of Silent Pilgrims, found by interacting with the fountain in Albero, and speak with them to trade it for the Incorrupt Hand of the Fraternal Master.
For those wishing to jump down through the mists that usually indicate a deadly drop, the Penitent One will need to seek the Relic known as the Linen of Golden Thread, for it allows the player to pass through the descending mists safely and opens up new paths for exploration.
Although there is no chain of quests or tedious criteria to perform in order to obtain this sacred cloth from Jocinero’s bull and moon painting in The Sleeping Canvases area, players will need to rescue at least 20 of the cherubic Children of Moonlight found throughout the game before their leader grants one the aforementioned Relic. Thankfully, there are many Children of Moonlight to be found; 38 to be exact, therefore finding enough to rescue should not be too difficult.
Here is another Relic tied to an NPC quest, though this one is pretty easy to attain, for the steps required are all found relatively close together and can be done very early in the game. Firstly, players will need to speak with the healer Tirso in Albero who can be found tending to the injured and sick.
The Penitent One can give him up to 6 items to progress his quest, however, only the first (any of them, the order does not matter) is needed to acquire a crucial item that leads to gaining this Relic: the Linen Cloth. The easiest quest item to trade Tirso for the Linen Cloth is the Bouquet of Thyme, which is conveniently found after activating the portal just below the area in Albero where Tirso is located.
With the Linen Cloth in hand, head to the giant statue in the Lake of Silent Pilgrims and trade it for the Shroud of Dreamt Sins, which will allow the player to hear the final thoughts of corpses found throughout the world which provide handy tips and hints.
Poisonous vapors found in Grievance Ascends are one of the most obnoxiously noxious obstacles in the entire game as it prevents players from exploring the area properly, though there is no hint that indicates there is a better way to avoid the deadly fumes other than simply trying to explore quickly enough not to succumb to them.
It is for this reason that players should seek out the Silvered Lung of Dolphos before bothering to explore this toxic area. Conveniently, and appropriately, this Relic is found in the same area. Keep traveling to the upper right and at the top of a vertically-inclined room, the Penitent One should find a gold and glass case containing it after some platforming.
As the most tedious Relic to obtain, players will have to perform a lot of steps in order before they can get their hands on the Three Gnarled Tongues. Those seeking to unravel all of Blasphemous‘ secrets will need it to access rooms that can only be entered by climbing roots that one cannot interact with unless they have the Three Gnarled Tongues. First, players need to gather these 3 quest items:
- Black Grieving Veil (found in the upper left quadrant of the Desecrated Cistern)
- Torn Bridal Ribbon (bought from Candelaria’s shop in the Graveyard of the Peaks for 800 Tears of Atonement)
- Melted Golden Coins (found at the end of a long room in the upper right quadrant of Grievance Ascends)
After collecting these items, head to Altasgracias’ lair in the bottom-leftmost room in Grievance Ascends and place them all on the platters before the hairy giant. After this, the large being will give the Penitent One the Egg of Deformity, which one must place in the conspicuous tree at the center of the Mountains of Endless Dusk area. Leave that area and then return to find the Hatched Egg of Deformity, which one can take to the giant statue in the Lake of Silent Pilgrims to trade for the Three Gnarled Tongues.
