In the lead-up to Zack Snyder’s Justice League premiering next week on HBO Max, the director has been busy promoting the upcoming re-release. Recently, Snyder has been sharing short teaser trailers focusing on each member of the Justice League, with a Wonder Woman-focused trailer shared yesterday on International Women’s Day. Today, Snyder shared a teaser that focuses on the character Cyborg, played by Ray Fisher.
Snyder shared the teaser on his Vero account with the captions: “#SnyderCut #ZackSnyderJusticeLeague #UsUnited and #afsp.” While the first two hashtags speak for themselves, the other two have significant meaning. #UsUnited is a nod to a line spoken by Ben Affleck’s Batman at the end of the 2017 version of Justice League. Snyder, the cast, and the fans have used this to promote the Snyder cut as a way of showing unity with all those who made the re-release possible
“#afsp” refers to The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, an organization that Snyder and his fanbase raised over $500,000 for last year. Snyder famously stepped away from directing Justice League after his daughter tragically took her own life. The director has been vocal about the issue and has continued to raise money for AFSP. He’s even received a Valiant Award from the Hollywood Critics Association for his work.
The teaser opens with Victor Stone, a.k.a. Cyborg, looking over some kind of holographic schematics before cutting to the HBO Max logo. We then see Victor in his Varsity Letterman Jacket standing in a desolate field. Stone was a star college athlete who, after being severely injured in a car accident, was rebuilt by his scientist father, Silas (Joe Morton) using one of the Mother Boxes. The teaser then shows Stone looking around confused as he sees himself standing with his parents, who encourage him to “find his place among the brave ones” through narration. We then see Stone take on his form as Cyborg as he triumphantly blasts off into the sky, a metal helmet materializing over his head as he states, “I’m not broken.” He flies past the clouds as the moon shines brightly in the night sky before the teaser cuts to the logo for Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
A lot of Cyborg’s backstory and characterization ended up being cut from the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League after Snyder left and Avengers director Joss Whedon took his place. Snyder appears to be amending that, as there is reportedly a 15-minute sequence in the four-hour cut that explores the character’s origins.
Fisher has been vocal in recent months about the mistreatment and racial discrimination he experienced after Snyder left, particularly at the hands of Whedon as well as producers Geoff Johns and Jon Berg. Fisher has been very supportive of Snyder’s return to the director’s chair, stating that Zack Snyder’s Justice League stands in opposition to the discrimination he faced.
