It’s finally over. The last episode of WandaVision has made its way to Disney Plus and Wanda’s story is over, at least for the time being. That said, the show was also clearly setting up quite a lot for the future of the MCU, throwing out all sorts of characters, concepts, and plot threads that will be quite interesting to see unfold going further.
One of those plot threads happens to regard the fate of Agatha Harkness, the ultimate villain of the show who attempted to steal Wanda’s powers for herself. Originally introduced as Agnes the nosy neighbor, the character had been lurking in the background for the majority of the show, always showing up at the most convenient times, and never seemed to be far from Wanda and her husband.
As WandaVision reached its end, however, it was revealed that this was because Agnes was never under Wanda’s control. A powerful magic user, Agnes revealed herself to be a witch named Agatha Harkness, one who was interested in Wanda’s incredible powers and wanted them for herself. In a final climactic showdown, Agatha revealed that Wanda was the Scarlet Witch and tried to take her powers from her, all while exposing the trauma Wanda was inflicting on the residents of Westview by trapping them in the sitcom universe.
Of course, this failed and after defeating Agatha, Wanda casts a spell that will force her to become Agnes the nosy neighbor again, brainwashing her into living in Westview as a harmless suburbanite. It’s not only a rather sinister punishment, but it’s also a rather convenient way to keep Agatha around in case the MCU sees fit for her to return and Hahn, who portrayed the villainous witch, hopes that happens someday.
During an interview with the New York Times, Hahn discussed the role and while she says the creative leads “keep it really tight” in regards to the future of any given character, she hopes she gets the chance to come back. When asked if she wants to return as Agatha Harkness, she replied: “I want to. Now that I have a taste of it, I’m like, ahh. I really, really love it.”
It’s impossible to say what Marvel Studios’ exact plans are for the character, although there’s obviously something in the works for the Scarlet Witch herself, given the ending stinger for WandaVision. One way or another, hopefully, Hahn gets her opportunity to come back, and perhaps Agnes the nosy neighbor can poke her head back into the MCU.
WandaVision is now available on Disney Plus.
