When it comes to Blizzard’s team shooter Overwatch, one of the greatest strengths is the memorable cast. This diverse collection of heroes have unique playstyles that are key to contributing towards team-focused gameplay. While the team is consistently bringing changes to the characters, the recent Experimental Mode in Overwatch is getting a delay.
To facilitate balancing, Blizzard put in an Experimental Mode for testing game modes and character tweaks. The update on March 4 made some interesting changes, such as speeding up Genji’s Shuriken speed and slightly increasing Zarya’s energy drain rate. Across the board, the newest Experimental Mode dealt with altering DPS and Tank abilities. While the community will have made up their minds about these buffs and nerfs, it sounds like the team behind Overwatch needs more time.
Some of these, like boosting Pharah’s fuel reserves and lowering Sigma’s barrier cooldown, are desirable for the community. Despite some of these updates resounding with Overwatch players, the changes will not be coming to the main game yet. Community Manager Josh Nash explains that the Experimental Mode tweaks are not coming to the game on March 9 with the PachiMarchi challenge event. The team is still working on feedback and performance about the patch before it releases to the live game.
Those disappointed about the wait can look forward to some extras coming to the title though. Other than the special event, Josh Nash also mentions that the new Competitive Mode season is starting too. While the mode was supposed to switch a few days back, there was an issue causing Season 26 to receive an extension. Hardcore fans will now be able to jump back in to compete without having to worry about hero changes.
While it is unfortunate that the updates are not coming, it likely will not be long before they arrive. Typically, Experimental Mode updates go straight to the game quickly even though it is for trying out hero tweaks. Some players may view this as a positive since it sounds like the team is actually reviewing the buffs and nerfs rather than shooting them over to live quickly. And with the PachiMarchi event and Competitive Mode season, it is not like fans do not have anything to do.
Of course, seeing a delay with no release date specified can be a tough pill to swallow. For the most part, these experimental changes are fixing problems players have been asking for. Of all the questionable tweaks that go straight to live, it is a bummer that the popular ones have to wait. Plus, with BlizzCon 2021 showing Overwatch 2 on the horizon, these gameplay edits are some of the most significant towards keeping the original game fresh. Nevertheless, Blizzard will surely be releasing the Experimental Mode changes to the main game soon enough.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
