Mei is one of the most divisive characters in Overwatch, though this is purely due to her kit and gameplay style. Mei’s personality, character design, and backstory is beloved by many Overwatch fans, and this special skin concept shows that clearly.
Mei has received plenty of special skins themed around events, ranging from her Penguin skin in the latest Winter Wonderland event to her numerous Lunar New Year outfits. She has also dressed up for Halloween, though for some reason, she has been denied some proper Summer Games attire. In 2019, she had a weekly challenge skin called Zhongguo, but this was just a recolor of her traditional outfit. Pajamei is the closest she has ever gotten, as this Archives skin shows her in a Summer Games T-shirt.
Redditor SillyGooseRobyn made it their goal to rectify this issue, sharing an incredible Ice Cream Mei concept that they would like to see used in Summer Games 2021. Immediately, the detail and clever design touches of the skin become clear, as this take on Mei sees the ice-loving hero dressing as if she worked at an ice cream parlor. Some loose brown boots join a striped apron, while a cute pink bow adds to the outfit. Mei can be seen wearing a skirt under the apron as well.
Mei’s fitting, tied up hairstyle also looks great, as do the gloves on her hands and hat on her head. With skins like Cadet Tracer pulling off the concept of these small hats in the past, it would make sense for Blizzard to do so once again with this skin. One of the best touches on the skin sees Mei’s robotic companion Snowball redesigned as an ice cream cone. Featured heavily in Mei’s animated short, the popular bot gets a pink head that has a strawberry on top. His container also takes on a cone design, further improving the concept.
Finally, Mei’s Endothermic Blaster steals the show, as the weapon gets some extra special touches that fit well with Snowball and Mei’s outfit. While Junkrat can counter Mei and her weapon in-game, he may not want to if this skin became official, as it would see her firing ice cream at her enemies. Sprinkles and ice cream can be seen in the canister, while the handle is replaced with a container of fudge. With the magazine taking on the appearance of a frosting container and the barrel mimicking a cone, the theme is well-realized, and the gun rounds out an excellent skin concept.
While it remains to be seen if Mei will get a rework in Overwatch 2, it would be great to see Blizzard take inspiration from this concept. SillyGooseRobyn clearly put a lot of effort into the design, and that care resulted in a terrific idea for a Mei skin.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
