Ubisoft Toronto’s Watch Dogs: Legion launched as a single-player action-adventure experience in October 2020, setting gamers loose in a futuristic dystopian London suffering under the oppressive control of Albion, a private military company. As part of the hacker group DedSec, players must recruit NPCs to form a multi-specialized team of operatives whose goal is to wreak havoc and wrest control from Albion.
The third installment in the Watch Dogs series, which debuted in 2014, Watch Dogs: Legions has up until now provided gamers with a varied single-player adventure, with driving, stealth, and hacking sequences, and the introduction of a permadeath option offering an added layer of intensity to the gameplay. However, the vast open-world setting of London seemed ideal for transforming Watch Dogs: Legion into a sci-fi version of GTA Online.
March 9 marks the launch of Watch Dogs: Legion’s free online mode for consoles, while the PC version has been delayed to an unspecified date. The new mode introduces four-player cooperative missions to the game, allowing gamers to build a team of operatives across London, each equipped with unique abilities that can make the difference between mission success or failure. Watch Dogs: Legion offers a wide variety of operatives to recruit from, making the range of possible combinations almost limitless.
The spy operative is equipped with a silenced pistol, has the ability to jam weapons, and can even summon a car for a quick getaway. A swarm of robotic bees with an Overcharger weapon might come in handy as well, making the bee keeper another interesting potential recruit. Other useful Watch Dogs: Legion operatives to have on the team include the paramedic, who cuts down on healing time, and the construction worker, whose cargo drone can grab out-of-reach items.
Watch Dogs: Legion‘s online mode also introduces Tactical Ops, which will require four players to make their way through longer and more challenging missions where cohesive teamwork and constant communication become top priority. The first of these missions, Leader of the Pack, will become available on March 23 and additional Tactical Ops missions will be added in the future.
The multiplayer online mode isn’t all about completing missions, though. The player-vs-player Spiderbot Arena in Watch Dogs: Legion pits an armed spiderbot against up to eight opponents, who must collect powerups, grab useful weapons, hack other players, and stay out of sight to come out on top. Random world events that can result in exclusive in-game rewards, additional game modes, and other surprises are also planned for post-launch release.
Some features of Watch Dogs: Legion’s new online mode will not be fully implemented on launch day. For example, an unexpected issue has resulted in the PS4 and PS5 versions being temporarily limited to in-game text chat only, but a fix is expected to be released on March 23.
Watch Dogs: Legion is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
