1980s Commodore 64 Game Comes to Steam | Game Rant

A classic Commodore 64 video game just hit Steam over 30 years after it was initially released. MicroProse Soccer is available now on Steam; an engaging, simplistic, yet surprisingly deep soccer game developed by MicroProse and Sensible Software and developed by Ziggurat.

The Commodore 64 was introduced in 1982. The console found pretty large success, even as it sold for $595, which was the equivalent of over $1,500 at the time. Estimates claim that that the Commodore 64 sold anywhere from 17 to 30 million units – a wide gap – but the console/PC hybrid did well. Games like 1988’s MicroProse Soccer benefited from the success.

The Commodore 64 had some very beloved video games in its time. And even though the tech may feel dated now, many of the games hold up. MicroProse Soccer, originally released as Keith Van Eron’s Pro Soccer, may not be the first game mentioned among the best soccer games of all time, but the game on the pitch had features that were ahead of its time. Players who download the game on Steam today can take on opponents whether they are player or CPU, play in the World Cup, International Challenge, and so on and so forth; choose from 29 different teams, and even take advantage of the game’s replay mode.

Last year, a Commadore 64 Remake was made available, serving as a nice retro and nostalgic console that is the Commodore’s version of the recent trend of bringing back old-favorite consoles. But even if some video game consoles lived on beyond the 80s with continuous iterations, it is nice to see games from that era live on, like MicroProse Soccer.
