Since the console’s release, Microsoft has spent a considerable amount of time enhancing older games, bringing titles like Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, and Sea of Thieves to the next-generation with significant visual upgrades. Recently, the company even implemented a new FPS boost feature for certain Xbox One titles, with the initial lineup seeing UFC 4, Watch Dogs 2, Far Cry 4, Lucky’s Tale, and Sniper Elite 4 get vastly improved frame rates.
As spotted by Twitter account Xbox News, it appears the next game to get the enhancement treatment could well be the final entry in Rocksteady’s Batman trilogy: Batman: Arkham Knight. The theory comes directly from Microsoft’s official Xbox Wire website, which showcased an image of the Xbox dashboard complete with an enhanced for Xbox Series X|S sticker on the Arkham Knight thumbnail.
Of course, nothing has been officially confirmed and it’s worth taking the game’s presence on Xbox Series X as speculation until Microsoft reveals it as fact. However, it’s definitely suspicious, especially considering the other games on the dashboard – Red Dead Redemption 2, Forza Horizon 4, and The Hunter: Call of the Wild – are all correctly labeled. There’s a chance that the image was a teaser for what’s to come, especially with Xbox recently announcing that it’s looking to go back and revisit several classic Xbox One games with the FPS boost feature enabled.
For those who never played the game, it continues the plot left off in Batman: Arkham City, following the World’s Greatest Detective as he’s forced to battle Scarecrow and the mysterious Arkham Knight after they overtake Gotham. Although it released back in 2015, the title is still lauded as a visual spectacle and would definitely benefit from a rise in resolution and frame rate. Players have taken to enhancing the game for themselves through mods and other tricks, with one player even bumping the game up to 8K at 60 FPS.
The Batman game feels like a fitting title to get back into players’ hands considering the license is returning to consoles at some point this year, with WB Montreal planning to release Gotham Knights. Although the title isn’t based in the same universe, WB Montreal will likely be bringing a lot of influence from the Arkham trilogy into its new release, especially as the studio worked on Arkham Origins and Arkham Knight’s DLC in the past.
Gotham Knights will take place in a world without Batman, where the Caped Crusader’s sidekicks take over his mantel and fight back against the city’s seedy underbelly. Rocksteady, on the other hand, will be fleshing out the universe of the Arkham trilogy with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which it’s aiming to launch next year.
Batman: Arkham Knight is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
