Beehives have appeared in Zelda games since the early 90s, with bees being a noticeable addition in A Link To The Past that could be exploited in order to defeat several tough enemies much easier. While bees can’t be caught and bottled in Breath of the Wild, their food byproduct, Courser Bee Honey, is a very useful food item that should be grabbed whenever the opportunity presents itself.
There are several places where the player can find Courser Bee Honey, though the majority of them are out of the way or difficult to spot. However, using the Stasis Rune while exploring wooded areas of Hyrule can make hives easier to spot as they tend to blend in with the trees otherwise.
Courser Beehives can be found just about everywhere in Breath of the Wild, from the Great Plateau to the Archery Range near Hateno Village. The best places to find multiple beehives, however, is in either Rutile Lake in the Ridgeland area or the Uten Marsh in Hateno. Both of these regions have multiple hives in close proximity to one another and can be easily farmed if the player is looking to do some serious cooking. When trying to harvest honey, the player needs to first shoot down the hive with an arrow, then defend themselves from the angry swarm of bees that don’t take too kindly to their home being shot down. The bees themselves are fairly easy to take down, though if Link doesn’t deal with them, they won’t leave him alone and can rack up some serious damage at early points in the game. Beehives can also be used offensively, as the bees will attack whoever is near enough to the hive when it is hit with an arrow, such as Moblins and Bokoblins.
Courser Bee Honey has one of the better consumable effects in Breath of the Wild when compared to other food items. Normally, most food will heal Link for either a segment of a Heart Container or a whole Heart Container. Courser Bee Honey, on the other hand, will heal Link for two whole Heart Pieces when consumed, making it one of the better food items for healing that isn’t a cooked item.
However, Courser Bee Honey is best used when cooked with other food items, as it will provide a stamina regeneration effect when paired with most food, though it gets its best effects when paired with various fruits or meats, usually creating Glazed variations of cooked food.
The easiest way to get the most out of Courser Bee Honey is to combine it with at least one Raw Meat of some kind to create a Glazed version of that meat. While the strength of the energizing effect that comes from Courser Bee Honey isn’t increased with the level of meat used, the rarity of meat does still determine how many Heart Containers that the food will heal. When combined with mushrooms, it will create Glazed Mushrooms, but if the mushrooms used are either the Stamela or Hylian Shroom, it will create the Energized Glazed Mushrooms instead which have an even greater energizing effect.
This same effect can be gained when using seafood or vegetables rather than meat or mushrooms, as using a Hyrule Bass or Hyrule Herb will create Energized variations of Glazed Seafood and Vegetables respectfully. If Link has the right ingredients, the player can make the quite powerful food, Honey Crepes, which requires a Bird Egg, Fresh Milk, Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, and Courser Bee Honey in order to make it. Finally, Link can simply cook Courser Bee Honey by itself to create Energizing Honey Candy, with it having a more powerful effect the more honey is used in the recipe.
Food items are generally needed for fairly simple side quests that can be completed in a matter of minutes, and the Courser Bee Honey is no exception. In Kakariko Village, the player can find Koko beside the general store who is looking for certain ingredients so she can cook her younger sister her favorite meals that their mother once cooked. One of the ingredients she needs in this recurring quest, Koko’s Specialty, is the Courser Bee Honey, which she will reward Link with an Energizing Honeyed Apple upon completion.
