Currys is randomly selecting which customers can buy PS5

It could be you!

UK retailer Currys has introduced a lottery system for people looking to buy PlayStation 5s.

As reported by VGC, folks can sign up for PS5 Priority Pass, which means you may be randomly selected to buy one of Sony’s new consoles when they are up for sale. To register, you have to be over the age of 16. Only one console is allowed per person.

This is one way that retailers are trying to stop limited stock of the highly-sought-after games hardware from falling into the hands of scalpers. Reseller organisations have already claimed to have bought thousands of PlayStation 5s when the machine went on sale in November, while one group boasted of securing 1,000 Xbox Series X/S consoles before retailer Very cancelled their orders.

Meanwhile, GAME has introduced checks to make sure that PS5 stock isn’t being bought by scalpers. In January, nearly all of Argos’ PS5 stock was bought by resellers before it event went on sale.

In the UK, politicians have suggested the government look into legislation making it illegal to resell items bought with bots online. Many of the aforementioned scalper groups use such tech to skip queues and check out with their ill-gotten goods quickly. This anti-scalping bill has gained the support of more MPs since it was introduced.
