Dragon Ball: Every Character Goku Has Mentored | Game Rant

Throughout the Dragon Ball series, Goku has made many enemies, as well as friends. There are few characters more likable and thus this puts Goku into a position of constantly helping others or trying to improve his opponent’s fighting skills for the sake of competition. While he has married, had children, and saved the world countless times, Goku has left an impression on those around him both friends and rivals alike hold a great deal of respect for the protagonist of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball Super, and Dragon Ball GT.

Being one of the strongest characters in the show, over time Goku has taken on apprentices or influenced the behavior of those around him. Mentoring and training are a massive component of the series and are considered central to the plot of many story arcs and tournaments.

10 Gohan

The eldest son of Goku, Gohan was originally expected to become his father’s successor and protect the Earth. The planet is constantly under attack from aliens, gods, and other villains who have an interest in wiping out all life or challenging the remaining Saiyans present. Because of this Goku planned early on to leave the planet’s protection to Gohan, who was believed by Goku to have more potential power than the protagonist himself.

Instead of becoming a divinely powerful Saiyan like his father Gohan chose the path of settling down and focusing on a rather uneventful life, save for being pulled away to a massive tournament or fight periodically by his father.

9 Broly

Broly is one of the antagonists that is considered potentially stronger than Goku in many respects. He was intended to become stronger than the majority of elite Saiyans on Planet Vegeta at the time of his birth before Frieza destroyed the Saiyan society. After getting into a fight with Vegeta and Goku, who were forced to fuse into Gogeta to beat the rival Saiyan, Broly was taken to a nearly inhospitable planet to recover. Goku then visits the wasteland planet Vampa with supplies to help Broly and his friends survive in the desolate environment, as well as offering to help train Broly and control his anger.

8 Goten

In Dragon Ball GT, Goku shows a renewed interest in training his younger son, Goten. Goten possesses a large amount of potential for growth as a Saiyan, despite not showing a great interest in fighting like his father. In one scene, he is forced to cancel a date to attend a fighting tournament with Goku and frequently expresses the desire to enjoy the more mundane aspects of life compared to the constant training and fighting routine that his father has. Nevertheless, GT showcases a new form of mentorship in terms of combative strength and power for Goten, who learns quickly and achieved Super Saiyan form at seven years old.

7 Trunks

While Trunks is Vegeta’s son and has trained with him extensively, Goku also took an interest in both Goten and Trunks while preparing them to become new protectors of Earth. While he worked with both of them independently, Goku also taught them special techniques that he learned during his travels. One of the most famous of those techniques is The Fusion Dance, in which two fighters merge into one singular form and combine their power into one being. This fusion is often used when Goten and Trunks participate in fights, and fuse to fight as Gotenks.

6 Uub

One of the most dangerous foes faced by Goku in the series, Kid Buu was able to destroy entire planets and his own body at the same time, only to reform himself and continue his rampage. When Buu was finally defeated by the protagonist, Goku wished that he would reincarnate as a human so that Goku could train him properly and fight with Buu again.

During the events of Dragon Ball GT, Goku enters the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament with his son, Goten. Uub is found here and promptly taken under Goku’s tutelage in hopes of making him the planet’s new protector. Much of the training that goes on between the two characters revolves around Goku aiding Uub in overcoming his stage fright and more passive nature.

5 Krillin

Krillin has earned an endearing reputation in Dragon Ball, however much of his time was spent cultivating his abilities in Dragon Ball Z. Goku and Krillin both trained with Master Roshi to become stronger fighters although he looked up to Goku as both a warrior and compassionate person. In the events of Dragon Ball Super, Krillin regularly appears to Goku, asking for advice and guidance in the various story arcs of the series. At one point, the protagonist even convinces Krillin to exist retirement and begin training again to protect the planet from the many dangers that end up causing problems for the human race.

4 Piccolo

Piccolo, son of King Piccolo, also started as a bitter adversary of Goku. Over time Piccolo became an indispensable member of the Z Fighters and protectors of Planet Earth, despite being a Namekian from another planet. Piccolo is considered one of the most loyal of Goku’s companions, and regularly joins him in fights and sacrifices himself for others as proof of his character development throughout the series.

3 Hit

Hit was introduced as the strongest mortal in Universe 6 during the Tournament in Dragon Ball Super. While originally fierce rivals, Goku and Hit became quick friends by the end of their match, with Hit expressing a massive amount of respect for the Saiyan. In later arcs, Goku places a bounty on himself for Hit so he can spar again with the assassin, and they exchange friendly banter and techniques while they battle.

The Universe 6 Saga displayed Goku’s ability to make friends during a fight, and Hit was quickly inspired by Goku’s actions and willingness to forfeit the match just to spite the Gods of Destruction. Following suit in the subsequent match, Hit mirrors and learns from Goku’s abilities as well as his kindness and wisdom.

2 Vegeta

An unlikely Mentee for Goku, Vegeta has expressed some of the largest amounts of character development in the entirety of Dragon Ball, much of it thanks to Goku’s constant encouragement. Beginning as a spiteful villain prince working with Frieza, Vegeta quickly became obsessed with the apparent power and ability of Goku to becoming lifelong rivals with one another. In later seasons, other characters like Piccolo note how powerful of an effect that Goku had on Vegeta and his ability to feel compassion for others, as stated during the Galatic Patrol Prisoner Saga while Vegeta is fighting against Moro.

1 Yamcha

Much of Yamcha’s early actions were antagonistic in nature, and repeatedly caused problems for Goku’s search for the Dragon Balls. After being repeatedly defeated, Yamcha displayed a notable amount of character growth and began to fight alongside Goku as well as going out of his way to offer assistance on their journey.  While retiring mid-way through Dragon Ball Z, Yamcha is still seen participating in and aiding during fights for humanity’s survival alongside the other protectors of Earth. Despite not being a powerful being or alien race, Yamcha is considered one of the most powerful humans and looks to Goku often for guidance and moral direction after leaving his criminal life behind.
