There once was a point when Overwatch fans thought that Overwatch 2 would launch in 2021. Unfortunately, it has since been confirmed that the Overwatch 2 release date isn’t going to be until 2022 at the earliest, so fans of the hero-shooter will need to make due with the original game until then. While Blizzard won’t be releasing any new heroes in the original Overwatch until OW2 comes out, the company is still looking to keep fans engaged with the game in other ways, like with a recent update that added next-gen upgrades.
A common trend since the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X is for game developers to release next-gen upgrades for their games that allow them to better take advantage of the new hardware. Overwatch can now be added to the list of games with next-generation enhancements, though they are exclusive to Xbox Series X and S consoles for now. To get started, all Xbox Series X owners with Overwatch need to do is download the game’s latest update.
With the Overwatch next-gen update, players will be able to choose between three different graphics. The first is Resolution, which is 4K at 60Hz on Series X, 1440p at 60Hz on Series S. The purpose of this mode is to provide a higher-resolution output, but it does mean lower image quality. The Balanced option lowers the resolution a bit, putting Series X at 1440p at 60Hz and Series S at 1080p at 60Hz. This mode is all about image quality at the cost of resolution.
And finally, the third graphics option that Overwatch fans have on Xbox Series X is Framerate. This option puts the game at 1440p at 120Hz on Xbox Series X, and 1080p at 120Hz on Series S. If Overwatch players on Xbox Series X select this option, they will be able to enjoy higher framerates, but at the cost of image quality and resolution. It should also be noted that only players with compatible monitors or television sets will be able to properly take advantage of the 120Hz option.
Blizzard has not announced plans for an Overwatch next-gen update on PS5 just yet, but one has to imagine that it will come eventually. In the meantime, Overwatch fans should have more updates and seasonal events to look forward to throughout 2021, with the PachiMarchi Challenge currently live in the game and the Archives and Anniversary events right around the corner.
Overwatch is out now for PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
