The many quests found in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are diverse and unpredictable for the most part, granting the interesting developments and dialogue that players have come to love from all games in the trilogy. Although the one titled “Magic Lamp” is not the most exciting when it comes to combat, storytelling, or character development, it still offers a simple yet satisfying puzzle as well as some hidden loot.
To activate this quest, one must speak to Keira Metz after completing the “Wandering in the Dark” quest with her. The sorceress will ask Geralt for his aid in retrieving a magic lamp that she was promised by an elf mage. If one agrees, the pair will enter a room with a magically sealed door and the Magic Lamp quest will begin. There isn’t a whole lot to completing this adventure in archeology, therefore one can follow a few simple steps to make sure that they have done everything worth doing while in this cave if more detailed instructions are not needed.
- Trail Keira into the sealed room
- Use one’s witcher senses to investigate
- Light the flames in the correct order (see image below)
- Pass through the door and look around the inner sanctum
- Use one’s witcher’s senses to find the lamp
- Climb ledge in the inner sanctum to find the hidden area
- Loot the hidden area, use its place of power, and fight the golem
- Use Aard to blast open the passage south of where one finds the golem
- Loot this 2nd hidden area
- Exit the cave and talk to Keira to complete the quest
After following Keira into this sealed room, she and Geralt will work together to translate an inscription in Elder Speech that they find on the magically locked door leading beyond. The duo determines that the inscription is actually a riddle that must be solved before they can proceed. It is a very straightforward riddle, though, some players can overthink it due to its deceptively simple nature. Here is the riddle in its entirety:
“Four guardians, four flames, standing proud in a line. The First to light his fire dared not march on the end. The Second, by the First, played a woeful lament. The Third kept close to his faithful beast. The Fourth marched not beside the First, yet like the Second, played a tune. And thus they stood o’er their queen, who slept beneath flickering stars.”
The directions of the riddle are pretty specific and hard to misinterpret, however, if one does mess up the sequence, between 2 and 4 wraiths will spawn and attack the player. After solving the riddle and lighting the flames in the correct order, the sealed door will open up to the next area where one can start picking up desirable loot.
After passing through the formerly locked door, Geralt and Keira will find the elven mage’s study. Use one’s witcher senses here to investigate and locate the magic lamp that the sorceress desires, which should be very easy as one doesn’t even need enhanced perception to see the object of interest despite the game’s insistence otherwise.
After locating the lamp, Keira will pick it up and comment on its mysterious nature. At this point, the player can backtrack and leave the cave, ending the quest. However, there is more loot to be found if one looks around the elven mage’s study in that there are some rocky ledges that can be climbed up to find some treasure, a place of power, and a golem to destroy.
Golems are essentially weaker versions of elementals; that is to say, that they act and look very much the same, yet lack magical attacks. They hit very hard and their solid punches cannot be parried, though all of its attacks are easy to dodge. They are quite resilient as well, so it will take quite a few hits to dispatch them. Be sure to prioritize evasion over spamming sword slashes as even a single hit can severely hurt Geralt if one becomes careless and impatient.
There are a few ways to make this fight less dangerous as well as some tactics that can let witchers drop this destructive foe quickly. For defense, it is recommended to always have a Quen shield up, as this will prevent the golem from landing a lucky hit on the player and dealing damage. The only attack that tends to be annoying is the golem’s ground smash, which lets out an area of effect damage circle around the golem’s body. The best way to avoid this is to roll away from the monstrosity as it is winding up.
On the offensive, the obvious choice of blade coating, Elementa Oil, will be of great use here. The Superior version is ideal, as usual for oils, though any level of the substance will be useful here. Stacking the effects of Elementa Oil with the damage boost granted by the always useful Thunderbolt potion will help to further obliterate the golem’s health bar. Combining these two effects with a sufficiently upgraded Whirl attack can also let the player stagger the golem repeatedly (if one has enough stamina), essentially stun-locking the artificial abomination for a trivialized fight.
After dealing with the golem, check the area for all loot and then blast down a suspicious-looking door with Aard to find another small, hidden area to loot. Once all the pillaging is complete, there will be nothing more to gain from this cave. Backtrack to the entrance and speak to Keira once in the open again to complete this quest and unlock the next one in Keira Metz’s questline, “An Invitation from Keira Metz”, where Geralt can help out the sorceress some more and possibly recruit her to his cause of fighting The Wild Hunt.
