A fan recently recreated Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick trailer with LEGO. This frame-by-frame LEGO remake was trending on social media and even got the attention of Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the sequel.
Top Gun: Maverick is the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott’s 1986 hit Top Gun. Cruise is reprising his role as aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, now is a flight instructor who takes his late partner’s son, Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), under his wing. The original grossed $356 million on just a $15 million budget and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Take My Breath Away.”
Augustus Danko, who goes by the name OnBeatMan on YouTube, shared his LEGO version of the Top Gun: Maverick trailer on social media. Danko stated that after months of “painstaking work,” he recreated the trailer in LEGO, one frame at a time. He even asked other LEGO builders and animators to help out with the ambitious project. The American brick filmmaker said he would release a behind-the-scenes mini-doc shortly. The video has accumulated over 200, 0000 views in just three days. Paramount Pictures stated the video was “incredible” and “one of the finest ever produced” on its official Twitter account.
Miles Teller told Men’s Journal that the Top Gun sequel avoided using any green screen. Instead, the actor had to take flight training for three months so that he could “get comfortable with the crafts” and shoot “all of the aerial elements” with ease. The flight sequences shown in the trailer for the sequel are impressively recreated, emulating the style of Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Cruise in the 2013 sci-fi film Oblivion. The loaded ensemble cast of Maverick also includes Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Ed Harris (Apollo 13), Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind), and Glen Powell (Set It Up). Val Kilmer is also retuning as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Top Gun: Maverick cost over $150 million to produce and was originally slated to be released in theatres in 2019. Paramount first moved the sequel’s release back a year to give the filmmakers extra time to work out the logistics of presenting flight sequences with new technologies and planes. Due to the pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick was forced to delay its theatrical release by another full year. Meanwhile, Cruise’s Mission Impossible 7 was pushed back several months and will now be released in theatres this November.
However, both Tom Cruise films are a part of Paramount’s plans for the company’s upcoming streaming service. Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 will join Paramount Plus, previously known as CBS All Access, just 45 days after their theatrical debut.
Top Gun: Maverick is set to be released on July 2, 2021.
