After players have had their fill of the Mountain Biome in Valheim, they can move onto the Plains. But even veteran players are regularly killed in this dangerous biome, fallen victim to tribes of Fulings, stampeding lox, or the vicious Deathsquito.
A Deathsquito is a giant mosquito that lives to suck the life out of anything that gets in its way. These nasty bugs can kill Draugr with ease and wipe out whole groups of low-level adventurers coming to the plains biome for the first time. If players aren’t ready with good Valheim armor and a big health pool for the 90 damage that a Deathsquito can sting with, they can be taken down without even knowing what bit them.
In order to be prepared for encounters with the Deathsquito, players will need a high-tiered shield and some of the best food combos in Valheim to survive. Being prepared is the only way to get through a trip to the plains and live to tell the tale.
Players will want to ensure that they have the proper armor before running into the Plains. A full set of Valheim‘s Wolf armor will not only protect the player from cold, but also from being one-shot by the Deathsquito. A fully upgraded set will cost the player a lot of silver, but it’s worth it to have 82 points of armor between a squishy Viking body and a giant bug determined to kill.
The best foods will be a necessity here as well. If a player has been using their Valheim time for farming and cultivating their lands, they should have access to carrot soup and turnip soup. Making sausage, which takes raw meat, Draugr entrails, and thistle, will also boost a player’s health and stamina pools by a significant amount. Cooked fish and Queen’s Jam are also great choices to give players as much of a chance at survival as possible. Stamina potions and health potions should also be a part of the player’s inventory.
A quick visit to the sacrificial circle to grab Bonemass‘ Forsaken Power of reducing physical damage is another way to help mitigate some of the damage from a Deathsquito’s bite.
In order to defeat the Deathsquito, players will need a silver shield or black metal shield. While the tower shields can provide more damage reduction, players will want to be quick on their feet. Since they will already be slowed by their Wolf Armor’s movement debuff, the additional slowness of the tower shields may be to their detriment. Silver can be mined in Valheim in the Mountain Biome, and black metal is collected from killing Fulings in the Plains.
Now that Valheim players are prepared for a Deathsquito encounter, they are ready to head into the plains. Keeping the camera zoomed all the way out will help to see the Deathsquito before it comes in for the sting. But make no mistake: if a player can see a Deathsquito, chances are the Deathsquito can see them too. Another good indicator of an approaching Deathsquito is a buzzing noise; Irongate boosted the sound of the Deathsquito in an update, making them a little easier to hear and track. If players don’t hear or see the incoming bug, however, the combination of good food and good armor will allow them to take at least one hit from the giant mosquito without dying.
Once the Deathsquito is in sights, it will have a distinct pattern. It will circle around the player several times, then turn to face them once they are ready to attack. As Deathsquito begins moving forward, put up the shield. If the shield has enough block, the player will take the hit without damage and without staggering. After the sting, a Deathsquito will pause for a split second before circling the player again. At this moment, players must be ready to swing.
Since a Deathquito only has about 10 health, they should die no matter what a player swings at it. However, the Frostner hammer gives these awful bugs a very satisfying swat across the screen. Worst case scenario, players can call on the Body Recovery Squad in Valheim to help get back their inventory if they should die.
Valheim is currently in Early Access for PC.
