Valheim: What is the Ashlands | Game Rant

In Valheim, players have to face the dangers of six biomes: the Meadows, the Black Forest, the Swamp, the Mountains, the Ocean, and the Plains. But there are three other secret biomes that exist on the massive map of Valheim, and the Ashlands is one of them.

As Valheim is still in Early Access and still very much incomplete, players can expect to wander into some unfinished and unpolished content. While the main six biomes have been filled out quite a bit with enemies, bosses, flora, and fauna, the Secret Biomes are three that just don’t have much going on in them yet. These incomplete locations are the spider-web-covered Mistlands, Valheim‘s icy Deep North, and the fiery Ashlands.

While all maps are procedurally generated, the Deep North always takes up the northern-most part of the round map while the Ashlands always sits at the very south. Unlike the Deep North, however, the Ashlands does not require any special gear to delve into. There is no “too hot” effect that is the counterpart to the freezing effect found in the colder regions of Valheim‘s map.

That being said, fire-resistant mead is a good idea to bring to the Ashlands when exploring as this landmass is filled with Surtlings. This is a great way to fill up with both Surtling cores and coal, both of which are dropped by these fiery enemies.

In the Ashlands, players can also find an ore called Flametal. This ore can only be smelted in the Blast Furnace, which needs the Valheim crafting station called the Artisan Table to construct. Flametal ore is smelted into flametal bars, which are described by the game as “the pure, shimmering core of a meteorite.” Unlike the other smelted metals in Valheim, Flametal does not currently have a use in the game.

While the Ashlands is part of the roadmap for Valheim‘s development team going forward, it is currently incomplete. In the future, players may be able to fight a fiery boss there, craft fire-resistant gear out of Flametal, or even fight one of the brand new enemy types that Irongate has promised, like the Svartalfr brigands or the Munin.

Incomplete as it is, the Ashlands are still certainly worth a visit. Just make sure to bring along an Iron pickaxe; no other pickaxe can mine the Flametal ore that players may want to start collecting in preparation for upcoming content. There’s a lot to look forward to in Valheim‘s future, and the Ashlands is just the tip of the very fiery iceberg.

Valheim is currently in Early Access for PC.
