The Elder Scrolls series might seem like any other RPG series that looks and sometimes feel traditional in its views of sexual orientation. However, the series is very accepting of the LGBTQ+ community and has included it in their games since the beginning. Though it’s been subtle about it in the main series, The Elder Scrolls Online has even included many LGBTQ+ characters and relationships in the game.
With all the lore and characters the series has, it can be a little tough to keep up with it. Here are ten ways that The Elder Scrolls series was LGBTQ+ friendly.
10 Daedric Princes Are Technically Genderless
The Daedric Princes actually don’t have a gender. They choose to present themselves as whatever they please depending on who they’re talking to or wish to ensnare. Boethiah has appeared as a female and male throughout history. Mephala is also known as “Androgyne” to the Dark Elves and has also appeared as a male or female. Hermaeus Mora doesn’t appear as either one and chooses to present themselves as a void with tentacles coming out of it and using a male voice.
9 Vivec Is A Hermaphrodite
Though Vivec looks male on the outside, this Tribunal god is actually a hermaphrodite. In some texts in The Elder Scrolls series, it is implied that he able to change his gender much like the Daedric Princes. It has also been implied that he and Molag Bal, the Daedric Prince of Domination, had a relationship and they had thousands of children together.
It also rumored that he and Almalexia were lovers for a short time after the death of Nerevar. In the book, 2920, vol 01 – Morning Star, it is written that Almalexia and Vivec are lovers during this time, but it is unknown if this is fact or fiction.
8 Argonians Can Change Genders Throughout Their Lifetimes
Argonians aren’t born with genders. They receive their genders after they hatch and drink sap from the Hist. They drink the sap throughout their infancy and the Hist gives the hatchling their soul. This determines their gender and appearance. Argonians are able to change their genders as many as they like throughout their life. Though it is unknown if this is the will of the Hist or if the Argonian wish for this on their own.
7 The Divine Of Love Accepts Same-Sex Marriages
Mara, the Divine of Love, accepts same-sex marriages as stated in the book Loremaster’s Archives: Rituals of the Divines. In the book, it is said that Mara accepts everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. It is also stated that she cares more about their souls and not their bodies. Priests and priestesses of Mara are known for their benevolence to everyone. The only time they aren’t kind is to those who show disrespect to Mara.
6 There’s A Quest Revolving Around A Transgender Character
In The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset, there is a transgender character who has a quest revolving around them. If the players go to Relenthill, they will find a woman named Rinyde. She tells the player that she is looking for her twin brother, Larydel, who ran away from the College of Sapiarchs. If players investigate hard enough, they will find out that the character Alchemy, a female Altmer, is actually the brother that Rinyde is looking for. Being transgender and going from male to female, Alchemy/Larydel feared that her sister would reject her. If convinced to talk to Rinyde, Alchemy will confess to her. Rinyde is surprised at this, but accepts her sister as she is and wants her to be happy.
The story of Alchemy was so very well-received that The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset won the first-ever Outstanding Video Game award at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.
5 Some NPCs Will Flirt With The Player Character No Matter The Gender
In The Elder Scrolls Online, some characters will flirt with the character no matter what gender the player chooses. The Morag Tong assassin, Naryu Virian, will flirt with the player character regardless of their gender. In some of her dialogue, Naryu is implied to find women attractive. Other NPCs in the game will flirt with the player character.
In The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Crassius Curio will call the player character affectionate nicknames no matter what gender the player chose. Serana from the Dawnguard DLC in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will lightly flirt with the player character during the quest.
4 There’s A Book Series About A Bisexual Female Investigator
In The Elder Scrolls Online, there is a fictional book series about a Breton woman named Investigator Vale. In the book series, she has a different lover in each book and has been with both genders. No one knows the author of the book series, but it is suspected that it’s a Breton woman named Arabelle Davaux. Arabelle is a retired soldier that was known to have been in High King Emeric’s army. Some believe that the book series is loosely based on her life.
3 The Silvenar Can Be Male Or Female
The Silvenar is “The Voice of the People” and considered a spiritual leader to the Bosmer. The role is expected to be balanced out with the other spiritual leader known as the Green Lady. The Green Lady is always a female, but that is not the case for the Silvenar. Despite popular belief, the Silvenar does not have to be a male though it is common the gender for the role. It is said that if the will of the Bosmer is mostly female then the Silvenar will be a female.

Though same-sex marriage is accepted, other Elder Scrolls games have been subtle about it when it comes to making NPCs in a same-sex marriage. The Elder Scrolls Online has plenty of same-sex couples in it and some have played major roles in some storylines. Velsa, a Dunmer woman, that fell in love with a female Khajiit, played a major role in the Thieves Guild storyline. She is a well-respected member of the guild and continued helping after she retired. During the quest, the player helps Velsa reunite with her long-lost lover.
1 Skyrim Had The First Known Same-Sex Couple In The Series
In the Dragonborn DLC of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the first known same-sex couple was subtly introduced. Two Nord men named Hrodulf and Bjornolfr can be found at the location Hrodulf’s House. Tragically, Hrodulf’s dead body can be found south from his house near the beach. A golden ring and Amulet of Mara can be in the boat near his body. The Amulet of Mara is used when one person wants to propose to another.
If the player investigates Hrodulf’s House, the dead body of Bjornolfr can be found. It is unknown what killed him and he has a letter from Hrodulf telling him to stay away. A letter from Bjornolfr can be found in the house, begging Hrodulf to come back to him. The way the letter is written implies that the two were a couple.
