According to an announcement made by publisher Atlus, sales of real-time strategy adventure 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim have surpassed 400,000 units. This total represents a combination of both physical and digital sales.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim released in Japan for the PlayStation 4 on November 28, 2019. It came to the rest of the world nearly a year later, on September 22, 2020. Atlus West’s localization team attributed the delay to difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. A PlayStation Vita version of the title was originally planned, but was ultimately canceled due to the poor performance of the handheld.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was developed by Vanillaware, the team behind Odin Sphere and Dragon’s Crown, and published by Atlus, best known for the Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, and Etrian Odyssey series. It utilizes a unique storytelling method in that it follows the connected tales of thirteen characters, the titular “Sentinels,” and features a non-linear narrative shifting between the time periods of 1945, 1980, and the far future. The central narrative, which is revealed gradually as new sections of the story are unlocked, revolves around the characters attending Sakura High School and fighting an army of monsters called Kaiju.
Despite releasing globally during uncertain times, 13 Sentinels performed well and received generally positive reviews from fans and critics. The characters, narrative, and art style were all highly praised, although the game did receive criticism for its real-time strategy based segments, which were seen as its weakest elements. It was considered by many to be one of the best “games players might have missed” in 2020.
Atlus stated that the success of 13 Sentinels was unexpected, especially so soon after hitting 300,000 units in January, but congratulated Vanillaware on the game reaching 400,000 units sold. Both developer and publisher hope that the game continues to sell well in the future.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is currently available for the PlayStation 4.
