Dragon Ball: Every Character Mr. Popo Has Mentored | Game Rant

When every enemy is stronger than the last, there’s nothing better to do than train! At least that’s how the crew on Dragon Ball approaches things. All of the fighters on the show have various mentors throughout the years that help them become stronger and learn new techniques.

Sorry Team Four Star, but we’re about to break the first rule of Popo’s training. While Mr. Popo might not be strong enough to take on some of the fights the Z Fighters face today, he had an important role as a mentor to many of them. None of the fighters listed here would as strong as they are today without his guidance.

10 Goku

When Goku was finally able to reach the top of Kami’s Lookout with help from his power pole, the first person he meets is Mr. Popo. After a brief battle and an introduction to Kami, Goku ends up training with Mr. Popo for a total of three years. Some of the techniques he learned become incredibly important in his future battles. These include the ability to sense Ki and the Super Kamehameha.

9 Yajirobe

Everyone likes to give Yajirobe a lot of flack but he was a vital part of many important battles and even single-handedly defeated a Namekian back in the day. Still, he’s the type that likes to avoid battles or only joins in when absolutely necessary.

He joins the other fighters training with Mr. Popo in preparation of Vegeta and Nappa arriving on earth but is mostly seen eating the entire time. In the end, he’s a vital reason the “Earth’s Special Forces” won the battle, so maybe that training paid off.

8 Krillin

Krillin trained on the lookout during the original Dragon Ball but becomes a full mentor of Mr. Popo while training to defeat the incoming Saiyans in Dragon Ball Z. Despite being defeated by Shorty and Scarface countless times in the Pendulum room, he gets his power level up high enough to hold his own once Vegeta and Nappa arrive.

While never shown in the anime, Krillin does have a fight against Mr. Popo in the manga after they train. He’s able to hold his own showing just how far he has come from his temporary master’s training.

7 Yamcha

Yamcha took a break from fighting to play baseball for the Taitans but answered the call to come train at the lookout so they could be prepared for the Sayain’s arrival on Earth. After a massive defeat in the Pendulum Room, he gains a new resolve and trains harder than ever over the next year.

Still, Mr. Popo maybe should have taught him to make sure his enemies are always defeated as his resulting death at the hands of a Saibaman has spawned one of the funniest Dragon Ball memes of all time.

6 Dende

As Mr. Popo is tasked with mentoring all of the Guardians of Earth, once Dende replaces Kami on the Lookout Tower, it is Mr. Popo’s job to show him the ropes. While this training doesn’t involve a mastery of martial arts that we know of, it is likely that he taught him some of his powers for conjuring which would include how to create the Dragon Balls.

5 Tien Shinhan

Out of all the Z Fighters that trained with Mr. Popo for the arrival of the Saiyans, Tien was likely the one who got the most out of it. He was able to take down a Saibaman with intense ease and even held his own against Nappa during their battle. While his Spirit Tri-Beam was unable to defeat him, Nappa praises the attack saying that if his aim had been a bit more true, he might have been severely injured.

4 Goten & Trunks

Gotenks would not exist without the help of Mr. Popo. While trying to figure out how to take on Majin Buu, he is the one that suggests they teach the two young Saiyans the Fusion Dance. Luckily, their training was successful and allowed them to enter the battle.

In the anime, both Goten and Trunks also end up battling Mr. Popo on the Lookout Tower before they leave. While they are both fighting as Super Saiyans, Mr. Popo is able to dodge most of their attacks and even take a direct hit without sustaining serious damage. It makes us wonder just how much strength he’s hiding.

3 Kami

Part of Mr. Popo’s tasks is to train the Guardians of Earth and Kami is among them. The Nameless Namekian that eventually split the good and bad side of himself, thus creating King Piccolo and Kami, did so in hopes that he could become a guardian. He was able to beat out Garlic to get the job and we have to believe it was because of some of the training he got from Mr. Popo

2 Chiaotzu

Chiaotzu was pretty underpowered compared to most of the Z Fighters when they began training to defeat the incoming Saiyans. Tien even asks him to stay behind but he decides to join them in battle anyway.

With his Telekenisis attack have no effect on Nappa whatsoever, he ends up trying to self-destruct to be able to take him down to no effect. Maybe Mr. Popo should have taught him a few new moves during their year of training.

1 The Other Guardians Of Earth

Mr. Popo’s main task is to be a mentor to all of the Guardians of Earth. While we have little information about them, we do know the “Kami of the Previous Generation” was the one that chose between Garlic and Kami to become to next Guardian. None of the other “Kamis of the Past” as they are called are ever shown on screen, but it is known that Mr. Popo was a servant and mentor to many of them
