Santa Monica Studio, the team behind the 2018 Game Awards game of the year God of War, has announced that it is looking for a lead writer on an unannounced game. This comes only six months after the official announcement of God of War’s sequel, God of War: Ragnarok.
Critics were eager to praise God of War for its incredible re-imagining of the series; the game boasted incredible visuals, an immense sense of scale, and a refined, powerful combat system unique to God of War’s protagonist. The story was also heavily praised, with Christopher Judge and Sunny Suljic receiving special attention for their performances as Kratos and Atreus respectively.
Fans eagerly await the next chapter of the redefined God of War series, but it seems Santa Monica is working on another project as well. A tweet from the official Santa Monica page calls for a “master of storytelling,” advertising a lead writer position in the company. The tweet is accompanied by a scrolling GIF of a paragraph of backstory for Kratos. This could mean that the unannounced project is somehow related to the God of War series, but it could also be a nod to the series that made Santa Monica Studios famous.
This hint at another project may come as a surprise to some players, but studios are generally working on multiple projects at a time. Triple-A game development is an arduous process that takes years of planning before development. Ragnarok was originally announced with a 2021 release date, which means that work on the sequel began before 2018’s God of War shipped. No official announcement has been made, but it seems likely that Ragnarok could be delayed.
As for what this new project may be, the team at Santa Monica has an impressive variety of games it has worked on in the past.
