A recent interview reveals that Halo Infinite will not only have a day/night cycle, but also a dynamic weather system as well. Both of the new elements will directly affect Halo Infinite‘s gameplay, with the intent of providing a more immersive, realistic experience.
The latest entry for Xbox’s flagship video game franchise, Halo Infinite was infamously delayed last year after a lackluster reception to its initial gameplay reveal trailer. Making the decision to delay what was intended to be the Xbox Series X’s launch title roughly a full year, developer 343 Industries has since released new Halo Infinite screenshots, showcasing a massive improvement in graphical fidelity.
When 343 announced the title’s delay, it also vowed to provide transparency and open communication between itself and the dedicated Halo community at-large. Sticking true to its word, the game studio just released its second episode of #Ask343, which is the hashtag where fans can ask the team about the details of Halo Infinite‘s features. Chiefly among these questions was the subject of Infinite‘s environment and, more specifically, how those certain elements might impact gameplay. The video confirms that in addition to day and night, there will be various weather systems, which include a wind and fog system. While there won’t be anything storm-like at launch, the developers hint that they are “excited about the future,” indicating the potential for more severe weather conditions later down the line.
In terms of how these “realistic” weather and time-of-day conditions will affect gameplay, the impact is expected to be extremely noticeable. One of 343’s devs confirms that whatever time it is does indeed affect what enemies players will run into. For example, Grunts will sleep more at night, along with more frequent Phantom patrols, which will be equipped with searchlights, adding what’s described as an “eerie” feeling to the game’s atmosphere. Players will also run into more enemies in darker areas and at night, specifically ones that feature “cool” glowing elements. The video also reveals that there is currently no hostile wildlife in the game, although it appears someone was hostile to Halo‘s wildlife, a la the Moa Burger-flavored Halo Pringles.
343 does mention there are cute “space gophers,” along with bioluminescent wildlife, adding some much-needed fauna diversity to the ring world beyond the warring UNSC and The Banished. The roughly 45-minute video goes on to touch on a number of other aspects about the title, including the news that Halo Infinite will not have playable Elites. Coming up at the 6:40 mark, the reasoning for the lack of “wort wort” in Infinite is because the developers want to be focused on telling a Master Chief story, particularly a Spartan story, and intends to emphasize that throughout all of it’s game modes.
While Halo fans are anxiously awaiting the release of Halo Infinite, it isn’t the only long-awaited Halo production on the way. Images from the Halo live-action television series have seemingly leaked, giving fans a first look at UNSC Marines and a real-life Warthog. Set to release in 2022, the next year or so is shaping up to be a massive one for Spartan-117.
Halo Infinite is in development for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
