Loop Hero: How Does Defense Work | Game Rant

Loop Hero is an homage to retro games of the past that incorporates elements of deck-builders, tower defense games, and roguelikes into one addictive package. In Loop Hero, the player is expected to die a lot. But with each death, there is an opportunity to build up a campsite hub and establish permanent upgrades that the player can carry into the next expedition in the hopes of making it a little farther into the adventure. It’s a gameplay style that can feel harsh at times, but one that is becoming more widely accepted as similar game Hades continues to win awards.

Much like the classic 8-bit RPGs that it references with its aesthetic style, Loop Hero also keeps the challenge up by hiding the full truth of gameplay mechanics behind a veil of mystery. One such case is the Defense stat, which players are likely to undervalue. It’s easy to see the appeal of armor that boosts HP by hundreds or points at a time, or regenerative effects that visually fill the health bar at exciting rates. By comparison, the Defense stat that only ever seems to increase by a couple points can seem like an underwhelming investment. However, the choice to equip gear that contributes to this vital stat is actually the key to long-term survival in Loop Hero.

While many games may have trained players to think that there might be a complex damage formula working behind the scenes, the way in which defense affects damage in Loop Hero is surprisingly simple. Generally, one point of Defense will negate one point of incoming damage. A slime encountered during the first loop of a new expedition will typically inflict four points of damage to an armorless and unarmed warrior. Merely by equipping a basic shield with three Defense, this threat will be reduced to almost nothing.

Magic Damage interacts with defense differently than normal damage, however. Just as the player’s Magic Damage inflicts a flat amount regardless of an enemy’s Defense, the opposite also holds true. In instances where an enemy seems to be dealing more damage than they should based on player Defense, it can be assumed that the enemy has some degree of Magic Damage just as the player might. Understanding the importance of both Defense and Magic Damage, and the relationship between the two stats, will be important for taking on challenging bosses.

While many types of gear can contribute to the Defense stat, a shield will always be the main factor. Players should be mindful of the amount of Defense coming from their shield at the very least, or else they will be overwhelmed by stronger enemies or hordes no matter how much regen they may have. Getting access to more gear and other survivability options will come as the player accumulates resources and builds structures in the base camp.

Loop Hero is available now on PC.
