The Burning Crusade Classic: 10 Things You Need To Know About Lady Vashj

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Classic is on the horizon, slated for release sometime later in 2021, and fans are delving back into the lore introduced to the game nearly 14 years ago. The Burning Crusade featured a number of well-known characters from the Warcraft RTS trilogy, among whom is Lady Vashj.

Lady Vashj was, in the past, a completely different person than she became during the events leading up to The Burning Crusade – her origin story explained more in detail in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and the Legion expansion. Lady Vashj makes her home in Zangarmarsh for The Burning Crusade and serves as one of the highest-ranking members of Illidan’s forces in Outland.

10 Lady Vashj Leads The Naga In Outland

Lady Vashj is a naga, a kind of snake-fish-human hybrid that could be described as an intimidating mermaid or, more accurately, a medusa. While her gaze won’t turn anybody to stone, Lady Vashj’s naga have a rocky history, to say the least.

In The Burning Crusade, Lady Vashj was in command of the entirety of the Outland naga, and herself under the command of Illidan Stormrage. Players encounter her relatively early on in their adventure to Outland, but she is nonetheless an important character in the expansion’s narrative.

9 She Was Once A Highborn Aristocrat of Vashj’Ir

In this rendition by Vaanel of her once-elven form, it can be seen that Lady Vashj was not always a naga. 10,000 years ago, Lady Vashj was not only a Highborne Elf, she was also the daughter of the ruler of the city of Vashj’Ir. Lady Vashj had a prestigious upbringing surrounded by the aristocracy, which may have caused her to become selfish and jealous in later years.

When the Well of Eternity was destroyed, ending the War of the Ancients, Lady Vashj and the Highborne somehow survived – though changed.

8 Lady Vashj Idolized Queen Azshara

Lady Vashj served Queen Azshara as a handmaiden, an extremely prestigious role in the Highborne society. She idolized Queen Azshara in the same way an impressionable teen might idolize a pop star. Lady Vashj adopted the dress style of Queen Azshara, copied her mannerisms, and even tried to mimic her hairstyle.

Queen Azshara was known as one of the most beautiful creatures on Azeroth before she was turned into a monstrous naga. Lady Vashj was certainly beautiful, but not the most beautiful, and hid her jealousy behind idolization.

7 She Became A Naga During The Great Sundering

The naga were created when the Well of Eternity was destroyed in the Great Sundering, 10,000 years before the events of World of Warcraft. The Great Sundering brought an end to the War of the Ancients, a pivotal conflict in the history of Azeroth that formed the world as players know it today.

Queen Azshara and her followers (Lady Vashj included) were sent to the bottom of the sea and transformed into the naga when Azshara made a deal with the Old God N’Zoth. She was unique among servants of the Old Gods, as she retained her self-determination and freedom.

6 Her Naga Defend Illidan In The Black Temple

In the Black Temple, the Illidari paladin Gathios found weak points in the temple’s defenses in the sewers while surveying the overall defensive capabilities of the fortress. Due to the naga’s affinity for elemental magic (and probably because they were snake-fish people who don’t mind getting wet), Lady Vashj was tasked to send a small group to defend the Black Temple at this point of entry.

As it turns out, Gathios was right. The players enter the Black Temple and fight High Warlord Naj’entus, the first boss of the raid, who was tasked by Vashj to defend the sewers.

5 Lady Vashj Enslaved The Broken In Zangarmarsh

Lady Vashj established her base of operations in Zangarmarsh, specifically in Serpentshrine Cavern. To create her underground lair, she began to conquer and enslave nearby Broken tribes, most notably the Wastewalker Tribe.

Lady Vashj wanted to control the waterways of Outland entirely. She started with Zangarmarsh, being the, ahem, marshiest place in Outland, and planned to expand to the rest of the continent.

4 She Has An Unlikely Ally In Outland… A Gnome

Lady Vashj is an ancient being, who survived the Great Sundering, served Queen Azshara, and whose elemental powers are practically unmatched in World of Warcraft. However, to efficiently pump water out of Zangarmarsh and Outland, she needed help.

Enter Mekgineer Steamrigger, a completely insane gnome. He built the machines that drain Zangarmarsh and appears as a boss in the Steam Vaults dungeon.

3 Players Encounter Lady Vashj In Serpentshrine Cavern

Serpentshrine Cavern is the base of operations for Lady Vashj, which she took over from the Coilfang, where she stands as the final boss of the raid. There are three dungeons located in Coilfang Reservoir, all having to do with the naga and their foul deeds in Zangarmarsh, as well as this 25-man raid.

The Serpentshrine Cavern raid shipped with the initial release of The Burning Crusade and should be available to players upon the release of the upcoming version.

2 She Must Be Killed To Enter The Battle for Mount Hyjal

The attunement for the Battle for Mount Hyjal in the Caverns of Time requires the player to kill Lady Vashj, along with a host of other Outland bosses. These bosses all drop Vials of eternity, gifts from Illidan that must be acquired to enter the Caverns of Time.

The Battle for Mount Hyjal and the Caverns of Time were included with the initial patches released alongside The Burning Crusade, but only the most dedicated players will complete it when Classic updates.

1 Lady Vashj Becomes Baroness Vashj After Death

When players kill Lady Vashj at the end of the Serpentshrine Cavern raid, it’s not quite the end of her story. Lady Vashj led a 10,000-year-long life of conquest, combat, and tactics – which led her right to the eternal home for those whose life was fulfilled by war, Maldraxxus.

Baroness Vashj served the House of Eyes before the betrayal of the Necrolords, and players work alongside her and Draka, Thrall’s mother, to restore order to the defenders of the Shadowlands.
