For fans of the Fable games, each new entry into the franchise brings a new opportunity to create a story as they see fit. Whether they be the hero or villain, players are always willing to go back to the original Fable trilogy for a laugh and heavy decision from time to time. With the announcement of the new entry into the franchise at a July 2020 Xbox event, the rumor mills have been spinning about what could be included in the next Fable title. While fans have no idea how long the wait will be, there has been no shortage of ideas from fans.
That being said, many are expecting this new Fable to be a fresh start for the franchise that had run out of steam by Fable 3. It’s likely that players can expect Fable will stick to its Albion setting, with magic and storytelling playing an integral part. Other than that, there is little known about what the next game will be. It could be up to another year before more solid details on the next Fable are released, but until then there have been some interesting rumors floating around in recent years about what to expect.
As fans have waited for Fable 4, they’ve been forced to speculate on each new tidbit of information that gets leaked. This, of course, can lead to some outlandish ideas that are the product of time and speculation. People have been speculating the next Fable would be announced since way back in 2011. While working on Fable: The Journey in 2011, it was reported the fans could expect a “controller-based” Fable 4 by 2013. Whether this was the cancelled Fable Legends in 2016 or not, one can only guess. If not, it means that this new iteration has been in development for at least a decade.
In 2018, there were rumors from that fans would hear about the next Fable entry at that year’s E3, along with Halo and Forza. While players would learn about the developer of Fable, they wouldn’t know just who Playground Games was until it was revealed they’d be working on the new entry. That same year there were rumors that the new Fable 4 was developed for the Xbox One X. Fans now know this is false, as it seems the game is purely a PC and Xbox Series X title.
While the majority of rumors about the new Fable have proven to be false, there have been some leaks and chatter that leans itself to the more authentic. As mentioned above, the rumor of Fable being at E3 2018 was kind of true, with the developer behind the entry being revealed with the promise of a new open-world project. Before it was announced, there were rumors about Playground Games hiring industry professionals to work on a big new game. That turned out to be true, as the new Fable will most likely be the biggest yet.
While interesting, all rumors are just that until they’re confirmed by the developer or seen in-game. Anything can change over the course of a game’s development, and open-world games especially so. It could still be a long time before we see the next entry, with only the reveal trailer being shown so far. While it’s been a long wait for this next entry, the new talent and technology behind this new Fable will hopefulyl make it one to remember.
Fable is currently in development for PC and Xbox Series X.
