The Joker is a pretty popular character, just ask Jared Leto and Zack Snyder. However, the Joker’s political views are quite extreme at best and sociopathic by normal standards, yet none of that is stopping YuuSuke Kawai from running for office in full Clown Prince of Crime attire.
Kawai’s governor bid aims to put him in charge of the Chiba Prefecture, located in the Kanto region (yes, Kanto, like the Pokemon region) just outside of Tokyo’s outskirts towards the East. Of course, a candidate as colorful as Kawai comes bundled with some pretty radical government proposals, so the man suited up for a broadcast presentation on Japanese public network NHK, though it could easily pass as the Joker holding Batman to ransom.
The Joker’s plan is fairly straight up when it comes to proposals. First, he wants to build a red Tokyo Tower clone that keeps the Tokyo Tower name in response to Tokyo Disneyland being located in Chiba. He also intends to rename Narita Airport and Makuhari Station as “Disney Sky” and “Makuhari Messe Isn’t here Station,” respectively. Lastly, he wants to make Frozen’s “Let it Go” the Chiba Prefecture’s official song. The video is really something worth watching.
Despite his natural penchant for chaos and crime, Kawai also addressed the issue of face masks during the broadcast. Considering himself to be very much pro-mask, in reference to people’s refusal in Japan to wear them, Kawai notes that they help prevent cold and allergies. Naturally, this isn’t the first time Kawai is cosplaying as the Joker and his YouTube channel has what might be some sort of pop music video or just a brilliant campaign ad.
It’s not unusual for countries to have joke candidates every now and then. In fact, the country even has official mascots for each region that look like villagers taken straight out of Animal Crossing, but very few would dare to campaign this way dressed as Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. For Kawai, embracing the Joker’s clown persona was a swing at winning’s people hearts, as “the clown is kind of a dark hero.”
Just like Arthur Fleck, Kawaii tried to build a career as a comedian before campaigning as the Joker. So if it’s any consolation, people are certainly laughing now as his Joker is all fans will be seeing until Zack Snyder’s Justice League premieres next week. Kawaii is by no means going to steal Leto’s gig as Joker in the Snyder Cut anytime soon, but he might win the hearts of some voters with his focus on such important issues.
Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is now available on HBO Max.
