Dark Souls Remastered: The 10 Best Axes & Greataxes | Game Rant

As far as weapon classes go, each excels at different aspects of combat. Axes, and the grander sister class known as the greataxes, have some of the highest damage outputs possible in Dark Souls 2. The trade-off is that they are a bit slower, heavier, and make their wielder vulnerable after missed attacks.

However, those skilled enough to make every hit count can truly bring out each axe or greataxe’s potential, for there are no awful members of these sibling weapon classes. Though there are a few that stand out as particularly awesome for their capacity to unleash even greater deathblows than their brethren.

10 Butcher Knife

A well-known weapon that has been seen in all 3 Dark Souls games that offers all the great parts of the one-handed axe weapon class, as well as some unique ones. The Butcher Knife gets 225 physical attack at the Regular +15 upgrade as well as A-tier scaling in Strength, making it very suitable for any build intent on pumping stats points solely into this attribute. It also heals the wielder for each hit made on a foe for 5 flat hp; not very much but it’s still handy as an auxiliary effect.

9 Greataxe

This weapon is the name-bearer for its whole class; the Greataxe. A veritable wedge of metal upon a similarly solid shaft, it is likely the first member of the greataxes that players encounter, as it can be found in multiple places:

  • Found in the Depths (behind some rat enemies and boxes not too far from a bonfire)
  • Purchased from the Crestfallen Merchant for 8000 souls
  • As a rare drop from the mighty iron-clad Berenike knights found around the world

When fully upgraded on the +15 Regular path, it gains 350 physical attack that adds a lot of power to each slow but deadly cleave. It also gains B-tier scaling with Strength and E-tier scaling with Dexterity for some decent boosts to the attack rating.

8 Battle Axe

Made for battle, this one-handed axe is great for chopping down hollowed peons and bosses alike. It has a reliable damage output for the early and some of the mid-game as well as low stat requirements, making it possible to wield the Battle Axe with a shield or even a casting implement. At the +15 Regular upgrade, it attains 237 physical attack with relatively fast swings to hew down humans or monsters of all kinds. The scaling isn’t that great, only getting C-tier with Strength and D-tier with Dexterity, which means that the Chosen Undead will likely stop using this axe in the late-game.

7 Stone Greataxe

A chunk of stone with an angled head that will crush foes more than cleave them, the Stone Greataxe is immensely deadly and heavy in equal parts, for it comes in at 24 weight. It also takes a 10 Dexterity and a huge 48 Strength to be held properly.

Once the player’s Strength build has reached these stats, they can expect a sufficient tool for destruction in this greataxe, for, at the +5 max upgrade for this special weapon, it gets 285 physical attack, B-tier scaling in Strength, and E-tier scaling in Dexterity.

6 Gargoyle Tail Axe

Harvested from the tail of the stronger of the two Bell Gargoyles, the Gargoyle Tail Axe is a flexible weapon in multiple manners. Firstly, it will be appealing to Strength builds that acquire it because it is an axe, however, its stat requirements and scaling indicate that it would be a much better weapon for a Dexterity build. At the +15 Regular upgrade, this one-handed axe achieves 232 physical attack, D-tier scaling in Strength, as well as B-tier scaling in Dexterity. It also curves during attacks from having a very flexible handle that moves similarly to how the boss would have used it, granting a slightly less predictable hitbox pattern.

5 Demon’s Greataxe

Requiring inhuman levels of Strength and stamina to be wielded, the Demon’s Greataxe was carved from the bones of demons, possessing monstrous power. There are a few ways to acquire it:

  • As a rare drop from the Taurus Demon boss
  • Purchased from Shiva of the East for 10,000 souls
  • As a rare drop from the minor Taurus demons in the Demon Ruins (5% chance)

Strength builds who obtain it will be able to upgrade this behemoth to +15 on the Regular path to achieve a sizable 285 physical attack, though its Strength scaling at a significant S-tier is the true reason that this greataxe is worth using for dedicated Strength builds.

4 Crescent Axe

As the only one-handed axe to deal innate magic damage along with the physical kind, the Crescent Axe holds an interesting niche in the game. With even split damage and having the divine auxiliary effect, it can permanently put all skeleton foes to rest as well as deal greater damage to certain other enemies.

At the +5 Regular upgrade for this unique armament, it obtains 172 in both physical as well as magic attack and also gets triple scaling: D-tier with Strength and Dexterity along with B-tier in Faith, lending it to be a great melee choice for builds that have much of the latter.

3 Black Knight Greataxe

With the trifecta of high base damage, a fast attack speed, and great reach, the Black Knight Greataxe is one of the best greataxes in the game. It consumes a lot of stamina, as do all the weapons in this class, though can out-space enemies easier than its brethren with a relatively shorter attack delay as well. When maxed out at +5, it achieves a huge 343 physical attack as well as B-tier scaling in Strength and E-tier with Dexterity.

2 Golem Axe

Another axe in the form of a huge wedge of iron, however, this one is meant to be one-handed despite the weight and stat requirements being that of a greataxe. The Golem Axe also has a special attack: when the wielder uses the one-handed strong attack, a wave of cutting wind is launched forward (and consumes 30 durability). This is very similar to the attack that the Iron Golem boss does when it wielded this weapon. To get this armament, players must ascend any +10 one-handed axe with the Core of the Iron Golem at the Giant Blacksmith’s forge in Anor Londo. Furthermore, the Chosen Undead can level the Golem Axe to +5, which lets it attain 255 physical attack alongside C-tier scaling in Strength and E-tier in Dexterity.

1 Dragon King Greataxe

A veritable colossus in size, weight, and damage potential, the Dragon King Greataxe is incredibly appropriate for what it is: the tail-cut weapon acquired from the Chosen Undead’s battle with the titanic Gaping Dragon boss. Like all dragon weapons, it grants its wielder 20% more damage reduction to magic and fire and possesses a unique two-handed strong attack. When unleashed, the player erupts with an AoE attack that is very similar to the Wrath of the Gods miracle at the cost of 50 durability. It receives no scaling, once more like all dragons weapons, however, it does not need boosts when it is upgraded to the max level of +5, for it achieves a ridiculous 570 physical attack with which it annihilates all adversaries.
