Destruction AllStars was originally slated to be a launch title for the PlayStation 5, but its release date was pushed back at the last minute. Instead it released this past February as part of the free PS Plus games for February 2021 (and is still free to claim for PS Plus subscribers until April), earning mixed reviews from critics. Developer Lucid Games has been listening to feedback about Destruction AllStars, implementing changes to keep fans engaged with the game.
The latest Destruction AllStars update, Patch 1.3.1, makes one major change by making Mayhem a team-based mode. At launch, Destruction AllStars‘ Mayhem mode was only playable solo, which was not well-received by fans. Various Destruction AllStars reviews criticized the game for that oversight, but now Mayhem is playable in an 8v8 variant. This change to Mayhem is the headlining new feature in the latest Destruction AllStars update, but it’s not the only change that was made to the game.
The developers also added nine new skins for Destruction AllStars players to add to their collections, including two Heroic skins and one Legendary. Players will also notice that completing Destruction AllStars weekly challenges will now reward them with both Destruction Points and AllStar Coins, which should make it easier for them to complete their cosmetic collections. Players will also get increased AllStar Coins whenever they level up in the game.
Beyond that, Destruction AllStars Patch 1.3.1 also includes some stability improvements and bug fixes, though specifics weren’t detailed by Lucid Games. Regardless, it seems as though this Destruction AllStars update should be well-received by fans of the vehicular combat game, as it adds a requested game mode, fixes lingering problems with the game, and re-balances the economy to be more user-friendly than it was previously.
Since its launch, Lucid Games has made a number of changes to Destruction AllStars based on fan feedback. This included a big price drop for Destruction AllStars, dropping its $70 price tag all the way down to $20. This way those who miss out on the game while it’s available as a free PS Plus game can jump in on the action without breaking the bank.
It’s hard to say if Destruction AllStars will ever be able to bounce back in a meaningful way to become a top-played multiplayer game. Right now, the PS5 does admittedly lack many other online multiplayer-focused games to take up players’ attention, but once other PS5 exclusives drop, it may struggle to keep its audience. However, if Lucid Games keeps releasing Destruction AllStars updates on a regular basis, it could very well ensure that the game has legs.
Destruction AllStars is out now, exclusively for the PS5.
