Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘s heavily anticipated remake has now been indefinitely delayed, after following a short delay from January 2021 to a later release date of March 2021. While many fans are disappointed with the delays, it does mean that Ubisoft is reprioritizing development which is a good thing after all.
Fans are already clamoring to know what’s in store for the remake, and Ubisoft seems to have been hinting at a couple of surprises in store. Just like the original release, players can unlock the original 1989 Prince of Persia which can then be accessed from the main menu. In addition to this, the official website also states that even more surprises await, which could hint at something greater.
There have been multiple entries in the Prince of Persia franchise, but many fans still consider Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time to be the best of the best. That doesn’t necessarily imply that others are bad by any means, just that the quality of the content in the first game far outweighs the scope of the world and mechanics seen in the sequels. However, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time wasn’t always imagined this way.
The game’s development was a haphazard one, filled with a bunch of problems stemming from poor management and an unforeseen increase in the team size mid-development. The development documentary states that the late arrival of the artistic director, lack of strong technical level design, and a will to deliver a consistent level of quality throughout the game’s runtime meant that a lot of sacrifices needed to made to deliver the game on the scheduled release date. Many enemies like a planned Sandtiger had to be cut from the final release, as it became too time-consuming to implement. In addition to this, several story beats and entire sections had to be cut out to make room for the debugging process, as the technical design decisions caused a lot of unexpected bugs.
Since a lot of it was already planned out ahead of release but couldn’t simply be included in the game due to the aforementioned constraints, the surprises could involve the inclusion of the cut content. While it’s still speculation by a long shot, it would serve as a great surprise to fans waiting out patiently for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time‘s release. Ubisoft’s willingness to devote the required time to development means something akin to this is definitely possible, but fans shouldn’t bank on such speculations for now.
As much as the prospect of receiving entirely new content sounds enticing, the most likely outcome seems to be the addition of some smaller things. The addition of switchable graphics styles or the addition of more filters could probably fill in such shoes. The addition of cosmetic upgrades such as new costumes for the Prince and her companion Farah or new weapon skins is also a great alternative, one that has a high chance 0f making the cut. It could also hint towards some remixed portions of the game, such as the obtuse bathhouse puzzle or some unbalanced enemy encounters.
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
