Valheim Dev Recommends Background Music to Play During Games

Next to gameplay and graphics, music is one of the main things that can really enhance the gaming experience, and throughout the industry composers work to create the best soundtracks possible for their games. Sometimes, though, gamers might want to shake things up and choose their own music to listen to while they play. With that in mind, Valheim developer Iron Gate Studio has a recommendation to help them get in the mood for a suitably epic viking adventure.

For those wondering what all the recent buzz is about, Valheim is a survival sandbox game in the vein of Minecraft and Rust set in the afterlife of Norse myth, where players are given plenty of freedom to explore its vast world, craft various tools and settlements, and fight enemies as their fallen vikings. Despite being in Early Access, the game has received rave reviews and sold millions of copies in just a few weeks thanks to its take on the survival game formula and the word of mouth it’s been generating.

With its rapidly growing popularity, new players will likely want to know everything there is to know about playing Valheim, and for some that may include the best picks for background music. Luckily, PCGamesN asked Iron Gate CEO Richard Svensson specifically what metal band he thinks would go best with it. His answer was clear: “Obviously anything by Amon Amarth! That’s the music of the development of the game.”

That’s about as perfect a choice as possible, all things considered. Since the 1990s, the Swedish band has been known for heavily basing its discography in Norse history and folklore. It’s fitting, then, that Iron Gate found inspiration in Amon Amarth’s viking metal while making its viking game, and many players will likely agree that songs like “The Way of Vikings” and “Twilight Of The Thunder God” would make excellent musical accompaniment for fighting one of Valheim’s bosses or sailing the seas in a longboat with friends.

PCGamesN’s recent interview with Svensson also revealed some interesting details about the game’s development. He explained how Valheim’s visuals were inspired by PlayStation 1-era graphics, both because of Iron Gate’s fondness for the aesthetic and the practicality of rendering low-poly models across a large map. As for gameplay, he stated that since Valheim is more PvE-focused than other survival games, single-player titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were among the main inspirations for Valheim’s gameplay.

Valheim is available in Early Access for PC.
