Every Friday, for the past two months, Marvel fans tuned in to Disney Plus to catch the latest episode of WandaVision. With the first Marvel show on the streaming platform coming to an end last week, fans were offered a behind-the-scenes look at their favorite show on Friday, March 12, in the form of a special episode of Marvel’s Assembled: The Making of WandaVision. As was the case with every episode of the series, the making-of episode initiated a new conversation on social media, this time about the Vision’s ears.
Actor Paul Bettany plays the character on screen and the android does not have ears. However, in Assembled: The Making of WandaVision, when Bettany shows up on set with his skin painted either red or blue, depending on the scene that was being shot, his ears are obviously well intact. This started a comedic trend on social media, with followers of the series either surprised or amused after seeing the actor in makeup.
Bettany’s Vision has been portrayed as a maroon android ever since the character first appeared in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But, the WandaVision documentary shows the actor wearing both red and blue makeup in different clips. The reason he has his skin-colored blue in some scenes is that some of the shots were meant to be a part of the black and white sitcom episodes, and it turns out that blue reads as red in that format.
In past interviews, Bettany has spoken about the makeup process being a challenge, with its removal being the more tedious part. Perfecting the character’s color took a lot of trial and error when the makeup team first stepped in, led by head Tricia Sawyer. “It was a very challenging, very hard job and one we couldn’t have done without our director, Matt Shakman,” Sawyer has said in past media interviews.
The Assembled: The Making of WandaVision episode majorly focused on the conception of the popular show, with most of the footage allowing fans to understand the intense filming process. It focuses on things like the visual effects, the characters’ costumes, and their development over the course of the nine-episode season. And after weeks of fans theorizing over Mephisto, Agatha’s true form, and Wanda’s revelation as the Scarlet Witch, it was refreshing for fans to converse over something lighter.
Even though WandaVision has come to an end, Wanda’s journey isn’t over yet. After her epic reveals as the Scarlet Witch, Wanda leaves to live alone in a remote cabin home. However, the post-credits scene of WandaVision‘s finale then shifts to an astral projection of Wanda, in her Scarlet Witch avatar, reading through the Darkhold, a scene that was similar to Dr. Strange using his astral form to read through various books in his first solo movie. This scene will lead directly to the upcoming Marvel film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is scheduled to release on March 25, 2022.
WandaVision is available to stream on Disney Plus.
