Even though Super Mario 3D World‘s base game is a port to the Nintendo Switch, the ”Bowser’s Fury” expansion has so much new content for fans to dive into. Taking what everyone loved about the old game and bringing it into this decade, it’s no surprise that there’s a lot of details that most players haven’t noticed.
While the Mario universe is pretty detached, it’s also one of the biggest in the entire gaming community. The franchise gives creators a lot of room to sprinkle in reminders of some of Nintendo’s best work, making the world feel all the better for it.
9 Fury Luigi
Unlike previous Mario games, Luigi makes frequent appearances all throughout Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Given that the original game was released on the character’s 30th anniversary, the many faces of Luigi will always be there to remind the fans of the often overlooked brother.
One of these is the steady stream of 8-bit Luigi sprites that will appear after certain actions, sprinkled throughout the levels as a callback. The other time players will see him is in his fury form, a combination of Metal Mario and Gooigi from Luigi’s Mansion.
8 Rosalina
The character makes a big comeback from Super Mario Galaxy where fans were introduced to Rosalina as the protector of the cosmos, one of the most powerful figures in the series. The princess is available to play once users unlock her after beating World ★-2, which is called Super Galaxy.
Much like Princess Peach, Rosalina moves at a slower pace compared to the rest of the characters. Using her spin attacks and incredibly high jumps, players will be able to mix up the game style.
7 Secret Warp Pipes
Dating back to the earliest Super Mario games, the games have secret warp zones in secluded areas that only the most curious players end up finding. Either leading to hidden exits or undercover levels, it all kicks off at the second level you can play.
Even using invisible blocks and camouflaged walls to access the warp pipes, finding them without a guide is just as much a case of luck as it is skill.
6 Mount Must Dash
World 3-6 might look a little familiar to those who played the original Super Mario Kart on the SNES, particularly on the Mario Circuit courses. Taking the old school fans back to 1992 and even giving them the soundtrack back, players get a little nostalgia without having to deal with the 8-bit graphics and mechanics.
Must Dash also brings back that cheesy humor that gamers grew to know and love, Nintendo never letting a good pun go to waste. Celebrating the game that kicked the beloved spin-off racing series off and combining it with one of the most popular current titles, Mount Must Dash is for the old heads.
5 Luigi Bros.
Another callback to the originals, only this time Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is going all the way back. The origins of Mario Bros. and a chance for people to go back to the beginning and see what created all the hype in the first place. Although in this version it’s Luigi instead of Mario that players will be guiding through platforms.
Moving back beyond consoles and diving back into a world where Arcade games ruled, Luigi Bros. won’t come for free. The easiest way to get access is by buying New Super Luigi U and have a save file on your Wii, but if you’re up for the challenge then completing eight worlds in Super Mario 3D World will do it too.
4 Super Mario Sunshine
Staying in the same vein by calling out the success of the Mario franchise, Nintendo also included some distinct features from the Super Mario Sunshine series. For example, the subtle gooey Ms that end up revealing special items with the trusty sidekick Baby Bowser.
Instead of the original Mario’s M, this game will see shadow Mario’s black logo across the walls, then sucking him in and transporting him to Lake Lapcat. While Baby Bowser’s character is much more prevalent in the game, the graffiti is a subtle nod instead of an obvious one.
3 Hieroglyphs
This is hands down one of the best done Easter eggs and it’s not even calling back to one of Nintendo’s classics, as it lays out the world the player is exploring in 3D World. The hieroglyphs also don’t jump out at the player but are visible so that those who look can find them.
Ranging from key pieces of the narrative to important structures, players can follow an entire story through the symbols. Decorating Lake Lapcat and breathing some life into the environment.
2 Fury Bowser
The main character that got players so excited for the new add-on, Fury Bowser’s huge size and intimidating features finally make the long-standing enemy seem like a fresh challenge. Turning the added level into a giant fight between Cat Mario and Fury Bowser, fans get some new mechanics to mess around with.
Anyone who has seen Giga Bowser in Super Smash Bros Ultimate will see the resemblance pretty quickly, although this version is 10 times the size. Fury Bowser’s dark form and glowing red eyes take Giga Bowser and crank the intimidation level up.
1 Maneki-Niko Cats
The strong cat theme in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is weaved through all the content, with Mario’s cat form being used for most of the big moments in the story. If the Lucky Bell is used, Nintendo’s mascot transforms into Lucky Cat Mario and becomes invincible to all regular enemies.
This is a direct reference to the Maneki-Niko cats, a figure that’s known to bring good luck to the owner. Using the exact pose and holding a coin, Mario and Luigi both have this form with alternating paws being held up.
