Select Bethesda Games Get FPS Boost on Xbox Starting Today

Now a part of Xbox, Bethesda is one of the most well-known developers in the industry due to an archive of memorable titles. The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series provide deep worlds full of narratives and customization for fans to explore. Players enjoying five of these titles on Xbox Series X/S can check out the boosted framerates available today.

Many of Bethesda’s games launched for previous generation consoles. Due to the extensive maps and complex details, titles like Fallout 76 saw downgrades in graphics due to hardware available at the time. Framerate can typically be the first reduced, because higher counts can result in poor performance depending on the technology. Now that the next generation Xbox consoles are out, these caps can go away to allow for a much smoother experience.

Recently, Microsoft released a wide variety of Bethesda titles to Xbox Game Pass. Of these, five specific games are receiving an FPS boost: Dishonored: Definitive Edition, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Special Edition, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and Prey. According to Xbox, those seeking better framerates will see a jump from 30 to nearly 60 for these titles. Plus, the feature is available regardless if a player owns the game or plays it through Game Pass.

The FPS Boost option available for Xbox Series X and S utilizes various methods behind the scenes. The team at Microsoft worked closely with developers to make sure that the gameplay experience for each title was preserved. Of the five, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 do not have the FPS Boost feature automatically enabled. This is because the resolution for each will be lower to meet the higher frame rate. Since players have a choice here, those still looking for a smooth experience need to use the “Manage Game” option to toggle FPS Boost and Auto HDR.

Higher framerate is one of the biggest benefits for next-generation consoles because of better visuals. While some get away with 30 FPS, first-person experiences like Skyrim and Fallout 4 benefit greatly from boosted framerates. Many of these games could achieve these marks on PC, so it is good to see console versions finally catching up. Better FPS is a big factor because certain games like Overwatch are getting framerate updates on Xbox Series X, but not receiving the boost on PlayStation 5.

The only main downside seems to be the drop in resolution for a few of the games. It is not a particularly great look for a next-generation console to already be making compromises, though this issue could stem more from the titles themselves than the console’s capabilities. In any case, those playing Bethesda games on Xbox should hop on today to try out the Framerate Boost feature.
