Clay is a resource required for building homesteads in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. Here’s where players can locate it around the province of Skyrim.
The Hearthfire DLC to Skyrim introduced a light version of sandbox gaming to The Elder Scrolls. Through it, players can now purchase plots of land instead of pre-designed homes such as Honeyside in Riften or Breezehome in Whiterun. The remaining holds that were not given homes within the city now have remote plots of land where the player can build large manors and mansions and design them freely, to a degree. These properties are Windstad Manor in Hjaalmarch, Lakeview Manor in Falkreath, and Heljarchen Hall in The Pale. Players have the freedom of arranging certain wings of the house and allocating them for whatever they’d like, such as a tower for either a library or an enchanter’s tower.
Clay is required for building any homestead in Skyrim, though it is not required for regular, pre-built houses. After purchasing a plot of land from the local Jarl for 5,000, upon traveling to the building site where the manor will reside, the player should notice a drafting table, a workbench, and a chest. Inside the chest are some starter materials that will be needed for building, including 30 clay.
While the clay inside the chest will go a long way, eventually, when building a full homestead from the ground up, Skyrim players will need to acquire more clay. Thankfully, it’s easy to find in large quantities, it just might take a while to mine a lot of it.
Nearby on any of the three plots of land will be a clay deposit, similar to the stone quarries needed to mine stone. Of course, this means Skyrim players will need a pickaxe, and it’s smart to simply keep a pickaxe in the chest on the building site. At Heljarchen Hall, one clay deposit can be found in front of the workbench. At Windstad Manor, one is located north of the chopping block. And at Lakeview Manor, it might be a bit more difficult to find near a group of three trees.
But there are over 2 dozen more clay deposits located around Skyrim, including at Ivarstead, which has 2 clay deposits, Lake Honrich, which has 6 just along the south shore of the lake moving towards Heartwood Mill, and Treva’s Watch, which has 2 deposits across the river from the fortress and 2 more in either direction. Additionally, each clay deposit yields 4,000 units before depleting.
As many Skyrim veterans know, wielding 2 pickaxes, 1 in either hand and hitting the ore vein as if attacking an enemy will yield the material much faster than using the “mine” prompt.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
