Star Citizen Hits Another Whopping Crowdfunding Milestone

Despite not having the slightest indication of a release date in sight, Star Citizen continues to attract legions of investors. The title, which is being developed for PC, has officially passed another whopping crowdfunding milestone, with Star Citizen amassing over $350 million.

Announced back in 2012 via Kickstarter, Cloud Imperium Games’ ambitious sci-fi MMO has undergone a long development process. The game was set to fully release in 2015, but accusations of the title being stuck in “development hell” have led head game designer Chris Roberts to announce that Star Citizen isn’t a “pipe dream.”

Those fears appear to be in the minority based off of the ludicrous amount of money Star Citizen‘s official website has reported. The site reveals that $351,026,475 has been raised, coming from over three million backers. The title just broke multiple crowdfunding records at the beginning of this year, a trend it appears to be continuing. The game appears to be gaining some momentum year over year as well, garnering roughly $47.7 million in 2019, and then $78.9 million in 2020.

For those who aren’t familiar with Star Citizen and how a single game managed to raise so much money over a nearly decade-long development cycle, the concept behind it envisions an extensively detailed, massively multiplayer sci-fi universe. Players will be able to create their own custom avatars and traverse wherever (and as whatever) they please, be it a miner, bounty hunter, trader and more. The game also features a single player mode called Squadron 42, although the beta for that was delayed as well.

While fans await more news regarding Star Citizen‘s release date, another game may be starting to beat it to the punch. Elite Dangerous announced its Odyssey expansion, which is set to release in “early” 2021. The expansion will allow players to disembark from their ship for the first time ever, leading many gamers to believe Elite Dangerous is becoming the Star Citizen fans have always wanted, and something they can actually play today.
