Ubisoft might be the butt of many jokes in the gaming industry due to their copy-paste attitude, but there’s no denying the fact that some of their titles have proven to be quite brilliant regardless. Far Cry 5 is a great example of this, serving as the perfect application of the systems that Ubisoft has been integrating into their titles for the longest time in order to craft an experience that will leave a strong and lasting impression in the minds of gamers long after they finish this brilliant title.
In fact, Far Cry 5 is such a brilliant experience that not many open-world games can compare to its sheer scale and excellence. However, the following ten titles do come pretty close in that regard.
10 Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series had been going through an identity crisis of sorts for the longest time, leading to a situation where the sales of the franchise had gone down to an all-time low.
However, with a one-year hiatus and the release of Assassin’s Creed Origins, Ubisoft was back to winning ways with the series. This can be seen with the next game in the series, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. The world of this game is expansive and full to the brim with a ton of things to do… although one has to admit that some of the stuff that Ubisoft has integrated into the game could’ve been nixed in favor of a more focused approach.
9 Watch Dogs Legion
The Watch Dogs series is another popular Ubisoft game that has definitely seen its fair share of highs and lows. While the latest game in the series might not be all that revolutionary from an open-world design point of view, the other mechanics introduced in this title are something else entirely.
The fact that players can recruit pretty much any NPC on the world map is definitely a unique and interesting mechanic that ends up being the beating heart of this ambitious title. Hopefully, Watch Dogs Legion will serve as a baseline that future games can improve upon.
8 Immortals Fenyx Rising
Ubisoft rarely tries to experiment around with different IPs, which is what makes the existence of Immortals Fenyx Rising. Most of the buzz for this game was generated through its naming controversy and its rather striking similarities to Breath of the Wild.
However, to identify this game through those factors alone is doing this title a huge disservice. After all, Immortals Fenyx Rising is still a great game that stands on its own two feet as a solid open-world title that any fan of the genre should definitely check out.
7 The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Of course, it would be impossible to name a game referencing Breath of the Wild without giving due credit to this legendary title itself.
Nintendo definitely pulled out all the stops when it came to reinventing the Zelda series for a new generation, and the end product definitely justifies its lofty reputation as one of the greatest open-world titles of all time.
The open-world featured in Breath of the Wild is truly one-of-a-kind and allows players to experience a slew of memorable moments during their journey to free the Divine Beasts and defeat Calamity Ganon.
6 Grand Theft Auto V
There’s a reason why Grand Theft Auto V is still going strong to this day as one of the most popular open-world titles of all time — the sheer amount of work that Rockstar put into this landmark title shows in every aspect of its design.
From the absolute riot that is Grand Theft Auto Online to the brilliance of the single-player campaign — Grand Theft Auto V is full to the brim with amazing open-world design that will keep fans hooked for quite some time indeed.
5 Fallout: New Vegas
The idea of enjoying the magic of exploration is something that most Bethesda games have nailed down to a T, but people who want a stellar narrative carrying this experience as well should definitely opt for Obsidian’s take on the Fallout universe.
While Fallout: New Vegas was initially panned by critics for featuring a large number of bugs and technical issues upon launch, the game has garnered a cult following over time for featuring excellent role-playing mechanics that allow players to truly play out the character they wanted without any compromises.
4 Ghost Of Tsushima
Sucker Punch Productions had been fairly underground for a while after their work on the Infamous series, with the last game in this series coming all the way back in 2014. So, when news came out that they would be working on another open-world title, it was clear that fans were more than happy to play a different — and promising — IP by this studio.
So, when Ghost of Tsushima was finally released, players were more than happy to play through a beautiful open-world title that ended up being a wildly entertaining experience from start to end.
3 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is easily one of the greatest and most reputed open-world titles of all time, in no small part due to the brilliant narrative and amazing graphics that carry this entire experience.
The main and side stories that Geralt experiences throughout this title are quite entertaining in every sense of the word, allowing players to walk a mile — quite literally — in the Witcher’s shoes all over the Continent as they experience some truly brilliant gaming moments that will remain in their minds long after this game reaches its inevitable conclusion.
2 Far Cry 2
While most people tend to only think about the Far Cry games post the third one when it comes to the series — mainly due to the similar design shared across these titles — one can’t fail to remember the masterpiece that is Far Cry 2.
While the game might definitely be showing its age, there’s no denying the fact that Far Cry 2 is a brilliant yet underappreciated title in the series that more fans of immersive open-worlds should definitely try out.
1 Far Cry 3
However, when one talks about the Far Cry series, it goes without saying that the first game that comes to the minds of most people is definitely Far Cry 3.
The game was a landmark title for the series, featuring a new system and an excellent antagonist in the form of Vaas who became the beating heart of the game’s popularity.
Regardless of what most gamers think about the series — or even Ubisoft itself — as a whole, there’s no denying the fact that Far Cry 3 was a major high for the series in many ways.
