Throughout the Avatar: The Last Airbender series, one of the characters fans wish they got a little more of was the earthbending prodigy, Toph. Headstrong and brash, the young girl got things done when no one else could. Her incredible power and creation of a whole new style of bending lead her to becoming one of the fan favorites in the entire show.
The comics recognized this and gave us the Toph content we’d been waiting on, answering some lingering questions from the show and introducing us to new details in her personality. From love life to leadership, Toph doesn’t disappoint even after the 100-year war ends.
10 Skill Upgrade
While Toph was one of the most impressive benders in the original ATLA series, her powers clearly hadn’t been refined yet compared to what she pulls off in the comics. Even in Korra when she’s a much older lady, her prime years had passed and we didn’t get a full look at what she was capable of.
In the rift, she’s fixing machine parts instead of simply tearing holes in metal doors, a fast learning curve seeing as it’s only a couple of years after the show. Even her power is increased, holding up entire buildings for extended periods of time. It doesn’t seem like there’s much room for improvement but the comics prove us wrong.
9 Aang Vs Toph
Something that was always going to happen as they grew up, Toph and Aang clash throughout the comics with their wildly different points of view. While it happened in their first meeting, the series made it seem like the two had found a way to gel. However, the two seem to be at odds with each other more than ever.
Not all of these problems are small fights either, with some escalating into actual bending battles. This might surprise some fans who left the gang at ATLA, siding with one side or the other. Not to worry though, in true Team Avatar fashion they always manage to find a solution, even if a few rocks were thrown on each side.
8 Toph’s Father
Toph left her family as soon as she possibly could to get away from her overbearing parents, not even saying goodbye on the exit. We always knew this was going to cause some issues down the line but the show never gave us a chance to see the aftermath.
While Toph is working to help a Fire/Earth nation factory stay on its feet, the owner is revealed to be her own father. Single and rather angry after the domino effect Toph’s disappearing act caused, it takes a lot of effort to get him to even acknowledge her as his own daughter.
7 Metalbending Academy
Though it’s touched on in the original comics, Toph is about to get her own spin-off all about the first Metalbending academy in all the four nations. Toph being the only one capable at this time, it makes sense that she’d want to pass this knowledge on to the younger generation.
Even though she doesn’t stay at the school all the time, having to venture off to help her friends and family, the school is left in the able hands of her 3-star students. Besides, what earth bender wouldn’t want to study under the greatest to ever do it?
6 Senior Governor
Toph in Legend of Korra is an old woman. She lives in a swamp so she doesn’t have to deal with people and their problems. While it’s definitely a fitting story for the stubborn warrior, this all changes after the series ends. With the Earth Kingdom left in shambles after their leader has been taken out, there’s only one leader who might put an end to the chaos.
It doesn’t mean she’s especially happy about the fact, even refusing to run when it’s first mentioned. It is how she finds herself back among regular society again though, even if the events that happen when they get there prevent the election altogether.
5 Factory Hero
A key example of Toph‘s raw strength at work, she elevates an entire factory ground while in the cave below. Not only is the feat impressive but the length of time she has to hold it, stalling the disaster so both her friends and employees can escape.
All down to the corruption that falls into power while the nations are figuring out how to work together, Toph keeps everything together through sheer stubborn will. Saving her father’s business and the lives of many innocent along the way.
4 Love Life
Fans of the show didn’t get too much romance from Toph after 3 seasons, showing more of her strength and independence. The comics however show us an entirely different side to the short powerhouse, becoming infatuated with the inventor at her father’s factory.
While they couldn’t go too deep into the affection pit, sending her completely off the deep end, Toph chose to be with Satoru at any chance she could. Now, it’s not the man she ends up with as we found out in LOK but it’s always nice to get some character development, especially from one so rigid in her actions.
3 Meteorite Bracelet
After opening up the Metalbending academy and trying to teach regular Earthbenders her ways, Toph quickly found that things don’t come as easily to everyone else. This forced her to find a way to discover students with the talent to pick up the newly discovered art.
Noticing that her meteorite bracelet would shiver every so often when she’d meet one, this became her guide to finding new benders to focus on. Trying to learn different ways to uncover the talent throughout the books, the whole gang had input on what to look out for.
2 Sidekick Sokka
Now that Aang and Katara had finally accepted their feeling for each other and Toph was busy with her own life, Sokka soon found out that being the third wheel isn’t the best idea. This leads to Toph inviting him to join her at the Metalbending Academy.
Not only does this save him from suffering the lonely road of a third wheel, but it also gives Toph a pretty handy problem-solver. Taking situations that Toph would have made worse with her bullheaded approach and calming it all down, Sokka becomes a valuable asset until Suki shows up to sweep him off his feet.
1 Executive Partner
As much as Toph hates the system, the factory that her father owns helped benders from different nations come together. Prompting her to save it when it was in trouble and eventually becoming one of the executive partners at the company, definitely not a role many saw in her future from the show.
She doesn’t wear a suit or tie, in fact, she tends to split her time between the academy and helping her father when needed. Though she isn’t the most business-minded person on the team, Toph is definitely one of the reasons the factory ends up surviving and thriving.
