The Xbox Series X has several helpful next-gen features for gamers to enjoy, but one of the best might be its Quick Resume feature. For those unfamiliar with the feature, Quick Resume makes Xbox Series X gameplay convenient by allowing players to switch between titles on the console and resume immediately from where they left off in one game or the other. The feature acts as a kind of auto-save that will ensure a player’s progress isn’t lost when switching to another game, and it allows them to skip the wait time required to boot up a game from the start.
Quick Resume is an automatic feature and cannot be triggered manually, but it looks like that will change with a future update. Xbox teased new Quick Resume features last month, and now gamers have their first glimpse of a new Xbox dashboard menu option called “Suspend.” This menu option is shown for a brief moment in a recent Xbox video detailing how the FPS Boost features in the Xbox Series X will work for newly acquired Bethesda games.
Microsoft already announced new Bethesda games coming to Xbox Game Pass earlier this month, and this video shows how gamers can toggle FPS Boost on and off on the Xbox Series X. But, whether by accident or design, Microsoft also reveals the new Suspend dashboard option for players just below the “Quit” option. This feature could finally give Xbox Series X owners the opportunity to manually suspend a game in progress when it is most convenient for them.
This Suspend option may allow players to activate the Quick Resume feature of the Xbox Series X without having to open another game. The Quick Resume feature already allows players to suspend three games at a time at minimum, and a manual trigger may allow for more precise save states for gamers trying to keep active states on four or more games at a time.
However, it will be interesting to see if the Suspend feature also increases the Xbox Series X’s power usage. Environmental impact studies have scrutinized next-gen console standby modes, claiming they may lead to excessive carbon monoxide output. Xbox has stated that the Quick Resume feature won’t decrease console performance or take up additional storage space, but the utility the feature provides doesn’t negate the power required to make it function successfully.
So far there is no announcement from Microsoft to indicate when the Suspend feature might come in a future update, but at least it looks like the option is currently being tested. Xbox Series X owners should be happy knowing the Suspend option may offer more gaming flexibility to go along with the console’s other next-gen features.
