Next-Gen Improvements Life is Strange 3 Can Make | Game Rant

After months of rumors and speculations, Square Enix is finally ready to show fans what awaits them in Life is Strange 3. The next entry in the Life is Strange series will be officially revealed on March 18 alongside plenty of other Square Enix titles as part of the company’s first digital “presents” event.

2019’s Life is Strange 2 evolved upon Life is Strange in several ways. Ditching its small-town setting, it took the protagonist Sean Diaz and Daniel Diaz on a cross-country trip, while introducing a diverse set of characters along the way. Its narrative focused on subjects that envelopes modern-day America. Life is Strange 3 is also set to feature a new protagonist, wielding a new power. There’s no information as to which direction Life is Strange 3 will take the series; however, it could make some key changes to make it feel like a proper next-gen experience.

Life is Strange games have never been the most visually impressive titles out there. Low-resolution textures and stiff characters can make the experience feel a bit dated though they are not groundbreaking issues. As such, Life is Strange 3 should be a visually refining experience as it could be the first entry to ship on next-gen consoles

The ultra-fast SSDs installed in these next-gen consoles have allowed developers to minimalize the loading screens in games. Life is Strange 3 could easily take advantage of this feature to make for a more seamless experience. Witnessing a loading screen every time a player opens a door can get tiresome, especially how even most current-gen open-world games aim for zero loading time. Even though Life is Strange’s development team isn’t as big as many AAA studios, it could work its way around to make Life is Strange 3 feel like a relatively modern experience.

Life is Strange games have always felt allowed players to fiddle with the protagonist’s phone. In Life is Strange 2, Lyla’s character didn’t have much screen time, though her text conversations with Sean added an extra layer to her personality. Going through Chloe’s journal in Before the Storm, or just reading past conversations with other characters, comprises some of Life is Strange’s most memorable moments. Life is Strange 3 could allow more options for players to fiddle with the protagonist’s phone. For instance, it could allow them to listen to the game’s plethora of licensed songs at a given time.

Music has been an impeccable force in the Life is Strange games. Whether it’s the licensed songs or the score, Life is Strange’s music has struck a chord with its fans in an inexplicable way, one that many hope would continue in Life is Strange 3. As such, the ability to listen to any of the songs while going through texts or vaguely exploring a given area seems like an interesting idea.  Life is Strange games have always been introspective, and there’s no better way to set the perfect mood than with the game’s music.

Life is Strange games, at its core, is about choices. All these games featured several endings that took shape depending on the player’s decision throughout the game. However, the consequences in these games are far less than the choices players get to make. In contrast,  titles such as Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain have more weight behind every decision players make. Although Life is Strange games have never primarily focused on delivering a vastly complex and diversifying narrative like those titles, it would be interesting to see it raising the stakes of its choices and consequences in Life is Strange 3.

Rumors suggest that Life is Strange 3 is called Life is Strange: True Colors. The game will allegedly feature an Asian American female protagonist named Alex with an ability to read minds. While Square Enix hasn’t confirmed any of this yet, it seems fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

Life is Strange 3 is currently in development.
