While the Pokemon series has introduced loads of rare monsters over the years, 1999’s Pokemon Gold and Silver on the Game Boy Color introduced fans to ultra-rare differently-colored monsters now known as Shiny Pokemon. Since then, Shiny Pokemon have appeared in every mainline Pokemon title, introducing players to new ways to find and capture them.
Over time, fans developed the pastime of “Shiny hunting” in Pokemon games, which typically involves utilizing different methods to increase one’s chances of finding a Shiny Pokemon. For example, the Masuda method increases the odds of encountering a Shiny when hatching eggs bred from Pokemon originating from 2 different real-world countries. However, it seems that one Pokemon Sword and Shield player has devised their own, much simpler Shiny hunting method.
In any Pokemon game, Shiny Pokemon can take up to hundreds of hours to find, but every once in a while, the community sees a very lucky player find a quick Shiny. Over on Reddit, user SirMunzo posted a photo of their in-game character next to their newly caught Shiny Pokemon in Sword and Shield. The user explained that they simply tried to dress their character like the Shiny they were after, and ended up actually encountering it in only 2 attempts.
SirMunzo was able to don a black and purple suit to match the colors of the Legendary Pokemon Tapu Fini, and then joked that they may need more suits to match the colors of other Legendaries. Just last October, the Pokemon Sword and Shield games released its second DLC expansion, The Crown Tundra. One of the biggest features to come from this expansion was the Dynamax Adventures mode which sees players work together, battling through a gauntlet of Dynamax Pokemon, finally reaching a Legendary Pokemon from past games at the end, much like the Tapu Fini SirMunzo encountered.
Fans soon discovered that the Pokemon caught during the Dynamax Adventures mode had much higher Shiny rates than normal, which ultimately led players to flock to the mode in hopes of finding Shiny Pokemon. Since then, fans have posted their differently-colored Pokemon finds online for all to see, wishing each other good luck in the process.
Pokemon GO has begun to see its fair share of Shiny Pokemon as well, with new Shinies being added regularly, often being the core focus of many of the game’s new updates and events. Now, with Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl coming up late this year, fans are excited to return to the Sinnoh region to hunt for Shinies of some of their favorite 4th generation monsters.
Pokemon Sword and Shield are available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
