Marvel’s Avengers is set to get a massive content update on March 18, bringing Hawkeye and the next-gen versions of the game to players. A story replay option and HARM room customization will also be available alongside the Future Imperfect Operation, giving those still interested in the game a lot to be excited for. This is not all that is coming on March 18, however, as a major update on what is next for the game will be included in the Square Enix Presents showcase.
Though it is still unclear what will be shown for Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel Games’ Production Director Danny Koo has hyped up the game’s upcoming panel with a “WhatsNext” hashtag on Twitter. Further, Koo has told players to “watch the sky” on March 18, seemingly teasing something about what the game’s next batch of content could be focused on. While the tease is vague, there are a few possibilities as to what could be revealed for Marvel’s Avengers at Square Enix Presents this coming Thursday.
With Marvel’s Avengers’ DLC seeming to have a clear pattern in terms of its content, the first thing that should come to players’ minds is another hero addition. Fortunately, narrowing down who the next hero could be is not too hard, as a leaked DLC roster has appeared online. According to this order, the next two heroes are the ones that have been officially teased in some shape or form.
Black Panther is one of these heroes, with the king of Wakanda confirmed prior to the game’s official release. While T’Challa will be great to see in-game, as his moveset is a fair bit different from that of the game’s current hero roster, the teaser saying to keep an eye on the sky implies an aerial-focused hero of some kind. While a flight-based character like War Machine or Captain Marvel would make the most sense, they were placed at the end of the leaked hero order. With characters like She-Hulk and Winter Soldier shown through the same leak but unable to fly, there is only one option that makes sense.
If a new hero is going to be revealed for Marvel’s Avengers at Square Enix Presents, it will likely be Spider-Man. Listed after Hawkeye and before Black Panther in the supposed release order, while also seen swinging through the sky more often than not, the webslinger seems like a perfect fit for the showcase. Further, original leaks about when he would be released were centered around the month of March, lining up perfectly with this March 18 event. Assuming that the PlayStation exclusive character is shown, players can expect a deep dive into what can be expected from the Marvel’s Avengers‘ Spider-Man expansion. From his powers, cosmetics, storyline, and villain, gamers could be seeing all that his DLC will be bringing to the game.
While seeing an appearance from Spider-Man or another playable character would be interesting, it would not fix the main issue with Marvel’s Avengers. More than anything else, players are tired of fighting against AIM. The same bots have been thrown in the way of The Avengers for 6 months now, with Adaptoids and occasional clashes with Abomination or Taskmaster not being nearly enough to keep fans invested. More bosses are certainly needed, but beyond that, another standard enemy faction needs to come to the game before more heroes and story content can truly be exciting.
One Marvel villain that provides both regular enemies and a unique boss encounter is Ultron, and he was already setup in the main story through the creation of Roy. An iconic comic book villain with the ability to kickstart several intriguing storylines, Hank Pym’s creation would be an excellent foe for the game’s heroes to face. Several different kinds of Ultron bots could provide new enemies to fight, finally providing the game with some much-needed variety in its combat sections. Ultron himself could have several phases, evolving as the fight goes on and having an interesting respawn mechanic due to all his drones. While one potential negative of Ultron is that his debut would see players fighting more robotic enemy types, this is still better than more AIM encounters.
Another option is a more Cosmic threat, something that could introduce an alien army led by a popular antagonist like Thanos or Loki. With Thanos fresh in the minds of fans due to his memorable appearance in the MCU, seeing him lead an army like the Chitauri or the Outriders would be thrilling. Likewise, Loki leading the Frost Giants or another Asgardian force could be equally appealing, winning over new players and pushing old players to give the game a second chance. While a new hero would not be a bad thing, prioritizing the addition of another villain and enemy faction would be far healthier for the game in the long term – especially if said villain and faction are not machine-based.
While a new villain arc or another hero Operation could be teased, Marvel’s Avengers fans could be seeing some other form of content revealed. Perhaps a proper “2.0” state of the game could be highlight, with a bigger focus on endgame content. A proper raid could be shown off, with the current Avengers roster linking up to take on a new, one-off threat like Galactus. Feedback on Marvel’s Avengers’ XP changes could be talked about, while other community questions and concerns could be highlighted during the game’s panel.
The stream could also be used to show off another necessary update for Marvel’s Avengers: more mission variety. This can be done through the lens of a new region, whether it be something like Wakanda or a Doctor Doom-controlled Latveria. New Drop Zone mission types could provide some necessary variety in the game’s objectives, while a fresh take on Warzone’s and Vault missions could grow the game even further. With more mission variety right behind new enemy types on the list of things that are needed for the game, this would be great to see covered during the stream.
Proper seasonal events set around Marvel storylines like Civil War, Marvel Zombies, and Secret Empire could prove to be a great addition, too. After, limited time modes and cosmetics have proven hugely successful for other games-as-a-service titles, and Crystal Dynamics should consider following suit with Marvel’s Avengers. While there is potential for this event to disappoint, it seems unlikely. After all, there are so many things that can be shown for the game, with new additions of any kind helping Marvel’s Avengers on its long road to recovery.
Marvel’s Avengers is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions coming March 18.
