With the number of nude walking behemoths in Attack on Titan duking it out for supremacy and viewer pleasure, it’s easy for the regular guys and gals to get dwarfed. Non-titan characters in the said anime tend to have a smaller screen presence, literally. Still, that doesn’t mean they’re not as important or as powerful as the Shifter Titan inheritors.
While Eren and his half-brother Zeke might be the big players now in Attack on Titan (both literally and figuratively), other characters have more kills, more medals, or have proven themselves braver or more influential. Considering they’re not titans, that’s quite an achievement; they were able to stand tall alongside giants.
10 Gabi Braun
Most of the fanbase hates her with a passion but let’s be objective here, Gabi Braun is one heck of a soldier even for someone her age. She’s one of the candidates for the Shifter Titan and Reiner Braun’s cousin and was supposed to inherit the Armored Titan.
Despite being still a teenager, she essentially became a war hero due to her cunning and boldness. So bold that she acted out of impulse and managed to kill a veteran of Paradis, namely Sasha Blouse. A few more years and she would’ve been more powerful than her cousin Reiner, even without the Armored Titan.
9 Sasha Blouse
Despite being killed by a single bullet, Sasha Blouse deserves a spot here for being a veteran of the Survey Corps alone. Whereas many of her comrades have fallen or digested by titans, she remained one of the most competent soldiers. For someone who’s as carefree as she is, that’s pretty impressive.
Then there’s the fact that she was able to stop a titan with nothing but a bow and arrow. During her younger years, Sasha could easily become empowered with but a whiff of food alone. If she were to become a titan, she probably could have eaten everyone in Paradis and have seconds afterward in Marley.
8 Jean Kirstein
One of the most underrated characters in the show, Jean Kirstein, otherwise known as horse-face, is Eren’s rival squad rival and a good friend. He’s second only to Armin when it comes to tactical and strategic thinking.
The difference is that Jean is also a capable fighter especially when it comes to taking down titans with squad precision. To that end, Jean was born to be a leader since, among all of Eren’s circle of recruits, he’s the one who manages to keep a level head at all times. In the latest season, he was instrumental in taking down the Cart Titan.
7 Hange Zoe
Speaking of someone instrumental to the Survey Corps and to Paradis, Hange Zoe is one of the lesser appreciated characters. She’s not exactly as strong or as tough as some of the more stereotypical fighters in the Survey Corps but her aptitude for research and intelligence has made her irreplaceable.
Her knowledge about titans and experiments is second to none in the Survey Corps. Additionally, she was Erwin Smith’s designated second-in-command and was picked by Erwin himself to succeed him in the event that he falls.
6 Dot Pyxis
Dot Pyxis is way past his prime as a soldier but nonetheless, he remains one of the most imposing figures in Paradis due to his influence in the Garrison Regiment. Pyxis is also the top officer of the said regiment, making him some kind of a general.
With that kind of authority, he can mobilize his own regiment which pretty much makes up a third of all the military in Paradis. Dot Pyxis can easily stage a coup as he demonstrated and even rally other top officers behind him.
5 Historia Reiss
Much like Hange, Historia isn’t the most skillful or the most accomplished member of the Survey Corps but her royal blood and upright moral compass make her an ideal sovereign of Paradis. That’s why easing into the Queen role was natural for her.
Now, she’s one of the most important people in Paradis and the whole anime world in Attack on Titan. Historia essentially has the whole of Paradis at her command as long as the generals and the army regiments are loyal to her. Of course, the people’s support is a significant factor, of which she has in spades.
4 Kenny Ackerman
As one of the oldest and most distinguished Ackermans in the series, Kenny was a handful even for the full might of the Survey Corps. He’s an Ackerman who was bred to be a warrior for the Eldian King in Paradis.
Hence, Kenny specialty is fighting other humans and he’s pretty much excelled at this activity even as he’s moving fast away from his prime years. He can easily wipe out an entire veteran squad of Survey Corps and even face Levi head-on.
3 Mikasa Ackerman
As the second or possibly third-best Ackerman in the anime, Mikasa deserves more praise and credit than she gets. In all respects, she’s a worthy successor to Levi Ackerman’s legacy. Even more amazing is that Mikasa wasn’t even raised to be a killer, unlike the other two Ackermans in the show but she still managed to live out her full potential.
She’s someone who’s practically invincible against any non-Shifter Titan and swats them away like nuisances. If given the chance, she also probably could have taken on a Shifter Titan and won.
2 Erwin Smith
Despite not having Ackerman as his surname, Ewin Smith was able to go toe to toe with Levi Ackerman and even managed to make him submit. That much proves how skillful he is as a ground soldier.
However, Erwin’ strength better lies in his leadership, tactical, and strategic abilities. He’s by far the most critical person for Paradis to have in any war. Erwin could have even become the ruler of Paradis if he wanted and the island would still prosper. That’s how good and valuable he is to the Eldians.
1 Levi Ackerman
Still, when it comes to raw strength and practical skills, there’s no better soldier to have than Levi Ackerman. He’s arguably the best Ackerman in the anime. Levi’s abilities allow him to excel in fighting not just titans but also human enemies.
He’s also the only non-titan character in the anime to take down a Shifter Titan single-handedly as was shown when he defeated Zeke in Beast Titan form. After that, he can still go on to slaughter dozens of titans even with just a handful of resources available. Sometimes it’s even puzzling why they still need Eren with Levi around.
