After an extremely successful run at the box office in Japan, Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train is finally coming to theaters in North America. The extremely popular anime film, which is the highest-grossing movie in Japanese history, is scheduled for an April 23 release in the USA and Canada.
The announcement was made on the film’s official Twitter page, which confirmed that the movie will be available in both IMAX and 4DX formats. It will also be launched digitally on June 22. The minute-and-a-half long trailer shared with the announcement gives fans a glimpse of the new adventures that Tanjiro, Nezuko and friends will get to experience.
Demon Slayer is confirmed to have a runtime of 1 hour and 57 minutes and will be available in both dubbed and subtitled versions. Fans who would like to buy advance tickets can do so starting April 9, via Funimation’s website. With an official R-rating, the film promises to offer fans violent battle scenes. The digital purchase and rentals will be distributed on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play, the Microsoft Store, Vudu, and the PlayStation Store, with pre-orders starting April 26.
Demon Slayer first released in Japan on October 16, 2020, and managed to earn $100 million US at the Japanese box office within just 10 days. In the past five months, it has been released in other countries, such as Taiwan and Vietnam, and has grossed close to $400 million. Apart from becoming the highest-grossing film and the most successful IMAX release of all time in the country, this is when Demon Slayer became the #1 Japanese film worldwide. The record was previously held by Spirited Away, the only non-English language animated film to have won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature. The film maintained its position for almost two decades, having first released in 2001.
While anime has become an extremely popular genre around the world, Demon Slayer had not received a global release thus far due to cinemas being closed in many parts of the world, including North America. The Japanese phenomenon is based on the fantasy manga by Koyoharu Gotouge, which has over 150m copies in circulation within Japan. The protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado, goes out searching for a cure for his sister, who has been transformed into a demon. An anime adaptation of the manga storyline, The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, already exists, with a second season expected to release later this year.
Demon Slayer – Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train will release in North American theatres on April 23.
