Doom Eternal continues the series’ history of combining breakneck speeds with visceral first-person action. With the release back in 2020, id Software’s sequel to Doom 2016 has established itself as a popular FPS with a focus on single player. The final DLC, The Ancient Gods Part 2, is bringing a special Sentinel Hammer weapon to Doom Eternal.
The history of the Doom Slayer is one filled with a variety of weapons to demolish enemies. From shotguns and rifles to a chainsaw and flamethrower, players can really shake up their strategy. Part of the appeal is combining every weapon available to achieve a constant flow of destruction with little downtime. The addition coming to this new DLC gives fans one more way to keep the pressure on.
The game director for Doom Eternal, Hugo Martin, goes into more detail about how the Sentinel Hammer works. First off, when the player uses the weapon it will stun all enemies in the nearby area. Then the creatures will drop more resources when finishing them off with the chainsaw, flamethrower, or grenades. This includes restoring health, gaining back armor, and receiving more ammunition. By storing up charges, the Doom Slayer can also swing the Sentinel Hammer and land epic glory kill finishers.
Martin points out how the new weapon can support the flow state that is so key to the gameplay. By making use of the Sentinel Hammer, players can keep blasting through enemies by restoring health and ammunition. Not only does it instantly finish off smaller enemies and stun larger ones, but if used correctly the weapon can take down tough creatures in a single go. When it comes to killing Doom Eternal’s Marauder, the player will just need to stagger, shoot, and stun it with the hammer to finish off the beast quickly.
With the gameplay in Doom Eternal being the main draw, it is great to see id Software adding more ways to play. The Sentinel Hammer offers unique features without trivializing the exciting combat. By working in tandem with the other weaponry, the hammer deepens the combat in the game rather than simplifying it. With new enemies coming in the DLC like Riot Shield Soldiers and Stone Imps, fans will need to get acclimated to relying on this weapon.
No doubt some gamers will be frustrated to hear that the Sentinel Hammer is part of an extra DLC. Plus, with the game having come out over a year ago, there may not be that many players hanging around for additional story expansions. Regardless, The Ancient Gods Part 2 is releasing soon and packing plenty of content for fans.
Doom Eternal is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
