Ubisoft’s upcoming adventure, Skull and Bones is a game based on the golden age of piracy. It tasks the player with sailing the Indian Ocean with friends to get the most exotic loot and plunder available. While there isn’t much known about the game’s new direction after its delay, there is still some information that curious fans seem to have dug out from the internet.
Skull and Bones‘ feature list has a seemingly unique gameplay mechanic called Fortunes, which are specific information about the area’s status, such as the threat level and quality of loot available. Many have claimed that the game needs a couple of unique features to differentiate itself from the pack, and Fortunes might just be the thing that fans have requested.
Skull and Bones‘ Fortunes system is listed as being an insight into specific land portions of the world. Using Fortunes, players will be able to get a sense of what threats lie in the areas ahead. Critical information such as the weather conditions, the density of loot-filled ships, as well as enemy pirates, all would be unveiled to the player.
This information would hopefully be able to help players in making better moves about when and what to go for. Fortunes could also subtly include a system of risk vs. reward, where players risk everything to battle it out for exotic loot in an active combat zone.
As much as the concept of Skull and Bones sounds enticing, the pirate game foundation has already been explored multiple times; both in Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed games, as well as a multitude of others such as Rare’s Sea of Thieves. Therefore, it’s essential for Ubisoft to create plenty of nuance to elevate the game above the pirate competition.
Fortunes seem to be a great addition to the pirate game formula, which could provide a much-needed additional layer of tactical depth. While it may sound simplistic, the density of information it could give to players would be monumental in driving success in unlikely places. Players could either forgo exploring hot zones and instead scour the lighter areas in search of safer plunders. Information related to world weather could also help players make well-informed decisions about where to go. If implemented and used correctly, it could even help players to abuse the unpredictable weather systems also coming in Skull and Bones.
Fans can already imagine getting a drop on a team of low-health ships fighting against each other in adverse sea conditions, and then finish them up to take the plunder for themselves. In the same spirit of things, teams with nimble ships can also gain a significant advantage over heavier ships in storms where controlling the ship is essential for one’s survival. However, fans should be aware that some of these possibilities are speculations at this point, and could be subject to change in the future.
Skull and Bones is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
