God of War Might Just Be a Future PlayStation Play at Home Giveaway

Sony started the Play at Home initiative in 2020 after the Covid-19 pandemic hit globally. Recently, the company revived the program and gave fans the 2016 Ratchet and Clank game for free, without any PlayStation Plus subscription required. Starting on March 25, there are going to be 10 more free PlayStation games that fans can claim, and from April to May, fans will be able to claim the completed edition of Horizon Zero Dawn. Considering the games that have been given away for free, it could be possible for gamers to predict some other titles that might be added to the Play at Home program, like God of War.

PlayStation hasn’t shied away from making AAA games free in the past. The initiative kicked off in 2020 with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, and so far in 2021, Ratchet and Clank has been made available for free, with Horizon Zero Dawn coming in April. With these big PlayStation exclusive games being made free, it has allowed many gamers to play titles they might not have been able to otherwise. There may be something of a trend with the Play at Home program as well, and God of War could be added to it down the line.

Sony has a strong lineup of PlayStation exclusive games set for release in 2021. Titles like the soon-to-be-released Returnal and Deathloop have generated quite a bit of buzz for the PlayStation brand and PS5. In addition to Deathloop and Returnal, PlayStation has several first-party exclusive games coming in 2021Horizon Forbidden West, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and a still-untitled God of War sequel are all currently set for release in 2021. Naturally, Sony would want to promote its big upcoming games, and the Play at Home initiative might be one chosen method for the company to do so, while also affording fans a chance to catch up with each series.

There could be a pattern within the Play at Home initiative so far that might inform future additions to the program. A recent and notable game made free was 2016’s Ratchet and Clank, which acted as a quasi-reboot and remake of the first game in the series. With Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart set for release on June 11, 2016’s Ratchet and Clank being made free could have been a primer for the next entry in the platforming series.

Similarly, Horizon Zero Dawn is scheduled to be given away for free starting in April. Much like how the Ratchet and Clank series is getting a new sequel in 2021, Horizon Zero Dawn’s sequel, Horizon Forbidden West, is scheduled for a 2021 release. The giveaway of Horizon Zero Dawn could be seen as a way of getting fans up to speed before the new game is launched. Zero Dawn is the first game in the Horizon franchise, and much like the 2016 Ratchet and Clank game, it’s considered a natural starting point for gamers to get into the series.

The next game in the God of War series has been set for release in 2021. Despite rumors of a delay for the Ragnarok-set sequel, the last official word on its release date came back in 2020 when it was publicly stated it would be released in 2021. Much like Horizon and Ratchet and Clank, this sequel is highly-anticipated and is one of the big PlayStation exclusives for 2021. Following the possible trend of Horizon and Ratchet and Clank, it’s possible that 2018’s God of War could be added to the Play at Home initiative at some point this year.

The new God of War sequel has high expectations from fans, and as a way of generating hype for the title, Sony could look at adding the 2018 game to the Play at Home program. The 2018 title is considered a new starting point for the game, as it’s a soft reboot and moves Kratos to Norse mythology. While the previous games in the series are relevant and directly tied into the first Norse-set game, some fans consider them to be inessential to experience the 2018 game. Like Horizon and Ratchet and Clank, it’s a natural starting point for series newcomers.

With the Play at Home initiative to run until June at the earliest, there is plenty of time for Sony to add God of War to the initiative’s ranks. It’s a hugely successful AAA game and it could follow a pattern laid out by the available titles on the program so far. The Play at Home initiative has been a great thing for some gamers since it began in 2020, and adding a game like God of War to it would bolster its already-impressive lineup.

God of War’s untitled sequel is currently scheduled for release in 2021.
