Throughout the Kingdom Hearts games, Sora and his friends have explored many worlds, with Kingdom Hearts II having a lot of memorable ones, with some being better than others. The worlds in the game consist of ones that were already introduced in the original game, as well as ones that were brand new to the franchise.
In Kingdom Hearts II, Sora, Donald, and Goofy continued their search for Riku and King Mickey as they fought against returning foes such as the heartless and Organization XIII, along with new enemies, known as nobodies. With new types of enemies to fight and a new story to explore, going to these worlds is very nostalgic for longtime fans of the series, but which are the worst? And which are the best?
15 Atlantica
Atlantica was never a world that fans of the series enjoyed, but its treatment in Kingdom Hearts II was the most disappointing. Rather than playing as an ARPG like most of the other worlds, players were put into a boring rhythm game that retold some of the events from the trio’s first visit under the sea, though plotlines from the movie that weren’t in the original game were also introduced. As much as Square Enix wanted their players to have some finny fun, the players had no interest in it.
14 Dive To The Heart
Like the original game, playing through the Dive To The Heart stage is one of the earliest things players do in Kingdom Hearts II. However, they play as Roxas this time around, a brand new character that isn’t happy to fight against the nobodies with a keyblade. While the original Dive To The Heart gave players important decisions to make as they learned the basic controls of the game, this version was playable after already learning the basics and no important choices had to be made.
13 100 Acre Wood
100 Acre Wood is a world inside of Merlin’s book that can be found in Radiant Garden. In the original game, Sora became friends with Pooh, Piglet, and the other characters in the story, and was ready to see them all again in Kingdom Hearts II until a group of heartless damaged the book. Characters and settings were removed, and Pooh lost his memory, causing Sora to have to search for the pages over again, like he did in the first installment. As players obtain the pages, they get access to different minigames.
12 The Land Of Dragons
The Land of Dragons is based on Mulan. Like many of the Disney worlds in this game, Sora, Donald, and Goofy go to them twice, with their first visit following the movie closely while their second had more of an original story. Both stories were great, but the level design of the world itself was quite bland compared to others.
11 Agrabah
Agrabah had changed a lot since Sora, Donald, and Goofy last visited it. Nearly every area was completely different, yet it still felt like the same world from the original game.
With more areas to explore and having a less complicated level design, some fans prefer this version of the world, while others like the other one more as they enjoyed the platforming and were used to the different locations within the world.
10 Port Royal
Based on Pirates of the Caribbean, Sora, Donald, and Goofy met Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann here. Here, the party fought Barbossa and Luxord (for the first time). Though it was weird seeing how the characters from the movie looked when next to Sora, Donald, and Goofy, the world itself was fun to travel around as players fought against pirates along with their normal enemies.
9 Pride Lands
In Pride Lands, Sora turned into a lion and was able to move much faster than he could in the other worlds. The trio helped Simba and his friends save their home from Scar, the hyenas, and the heartless. At the end of their first visit, Scar was defeated the same way he was in The Lion King, but returned as a ghost later on in Sora, Donald, and Goofy’s second visit, where they had to fight him again.
8 Space Paranoids
Inside of Hollow Bastion, Ansem the Wise’s computer can be found, which brings Sora, Donald, and Goofy to Space Paranoids, a world based on Tron. Space Paranoids has one of the most unique designs out of all of the worlds, truly making it feel like a video game within a video game. In this world, they teamed up with Tron to defeat the MCP and Sark.
7 Beast’s Castle
Back in the original title, Sora met Beast and Belle, but never went to their world. When they did in this installment, they were shocked by how different Beast was acting. It turned out that Xaldin, a member of Organization XIII, was manipulating Beast into doing those things. They ended up defeating Xaldin, who was the only member of the original organization to be defeated in a Disney world.
6 Halloween Town
Like Agrabah, Halloween Town changed a lot since Sora, Donald, and Goofy last visited in the first game. A lot of fans liked this newer version more as it also added Christmas Town, the other main setting in The Nightmare Before Christmas. After Maleficent brought Oogie Boogie back to life, he captured Santa, causing Sora, Donald, Goofy, and Jack to fight him again.
5 Olympus Coliseum
The characters in Kingdom Hearts have traveled to Olympus Coliseum a lot throughout the games, but this time they went into the Underworld, Hades’ home. Here, Sora, Donald, and Goofy met Meg from Hercules and Auron from Final Fantasy X, as they battle against Hades once more. Like in the original game, there are different tournaments for players to enter, giving them a reason to return here many times.
4 Twilight Town
Twilight Town is where the adventure begins. At first, players control Roxas, a character introduced in this title as a new keyblade wielder. However, things aren’t what they seem at first and Roxas turns out to be Sora’s nobody and a former member of Organization XIII.
Though many gamers didn’t like the beginning of this installment at first, they were sad to see Roxas go when Sora returned. Sora would go to Twilight Town multiple times throughout the game, but it just wasn’t the same without Roxas, who became a dearly beloved character.
3 The World That Never Was
The World That Never Was was Organization XIII’s headquarters and where players spend the last few hours of the game. Facing off against multiple members of the organization, ending with Xemnas, as well as reuniting with Kairi and Riku made this world very impactful both story and gameplay-wise. This was a great way to end one of the best games in the series.
2 Disney Castle/Timeless River
Disney Castle was originally introduced in the first installment of the series, but players weren’t able to actually explore it. In this game, however, they get to see both the present and past versions of the world. Disney Castle is the world ruled by King Mickey and Sora, Donald, and Goofy help Queen Minnie out when they arrive there. Timeless River is a tribute to older Disney cartoons and shows what the residents of this world were like years ago.
1 Radiant Garden
Radiant Garden is the best world in the game. In the original title, Sora went to Hollow Bastion, which was just a small part of a much greater world. Fans can go inside of Hollow Bastion once again, though it looks very different than it did when Maleficent took over the place. This world is also connected to 100 Acre Wood and Space Paranoids, causing players to return here the most. The story and battles here were also great with many of the most memorable moments in the game being reuniting with Mickey, fighting 1,000 heartless, and defeating Sephiroth.
