Today, Square Enix hosted a livestreamed presentation called Square Enix Presents to reveal more information on several of the publisher’s intellectual properties. Throughout the 40-minute video, fans were treated to the announcement of a new Life is Strange game, a new mobile Hitman title, and a glimpse at what’s to come next for Crystal Dynamic’s Marvel’s Avengers.
Coincidentally, this presentation premiered on the same date as the release of Marvel’s Avengers second post-launch story DLC, Operation: Hawkeye – Future Imperfect, as well as the game’s next-gen update, which features improved loading times, higher frame rate, 4K resolution, and many other general improvements. However, the big reveal during the Marvel’s Avengers component was the announcement of a brand-new expansion that’s based around Black Panther and Wakanda.
Titled Black Panther – War for Wakanda Expansion, the content will give players access to the Wakandan Jungle Biome, new enemies to face off against, and there will also be an appearance from Klaw, who is known as the murderer of T’Chaka, the father of Black Panther and the past king of Wakanda. Square Enix didn’t reveal much information about the expansion, but a short teaser trailer did confirm that the content will be coming later this year.
Many Marvel’s Avengers fans have known about Black Panther’s existence in the game for quite some time now, as there were teases from Square Enix just last year. However, since the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman last summer, Square Enix went quiet on the character’s release, most likely trying to be respectful to the actor and his family/fans.
And even though Boseman has died, Disney and Marvel are still going forward with the expansion of the Black Panther universe. The sequel to the award-winning film is still on track to start shooting this summer and Marvel has confirmed that it will not be using a digital double for Boseman and T’Challa will not be recast. meaning that the character will not continue to be in the MCU at all.
With that being said, it’ll be interesting to see how Black Panther 2 plays out, considering that the original Black Panther is out of the picture.
As far as Marvel’s Avengers, fans have been expressing concern for the live service game, as the development team has been pretty quiet on what to expect in terms of future content, so hopefully this new Wakanda expansion gives players a lot more to sink their teeth into.
Marvel’s Avengers is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
